Hamburg Tactica 2018... Lubeck

After an unnaturally early start (In my opinion... 7:00AM flight from Manchester) Alan, Michael,
Peter, Andy and myself arrived in Hamburg where we were met by our lovely friends Johannes and Oliver who whisked us off to Lubeck where we also met up with Frank Bauer.

Our first visit was to the Hansemuseum where we took a tour around the main building and its interactive displays...

Here is a selection of photo's I took when I wasn't being distracted by shiny things...

Alan and Michael find some nice looking armour to investigate...

Michael had been told that there were two rather rare Arming Doublets in the museums in Lubeck...
This was one of them...

Some examples of early Stag Nights in Hamburg...

These life sized models of monks were very convincing and a little bit unnerving ... even close up.

Next we moved on to the Marienkiche-St Marien in Lubeck...

The clean space and high vaulted ceilings make this a very tranquil place...

There is also a small but very nice collection of carvings and statues...

Finally we headed to the Holstein Gate -Museum Holstentor...

Where Michael found the other Arming Doublet ...

There was also this very beautiful wooden model of Lubeck itself...

We of course tried to work out the scale... and plotted a siege game.

It was now time to head back to Hamburg for Food , Drink and Merriment...

Next up... Hamburg Tactica 2018... The Show.

All the best   Aly

  1. What a wonderful photo diary Aly. The Germans do museums and dismays of history very well don’t they? I couldn’t help but think that this would be a perfect opportunity to capture this on digital video footage - “The Trip to Lubeck” in the style of Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon. I would imagine with the wit on hand it would be sensational viewing!

    1. Thank you Carlo...
I think any film about us would be more like a combination between Carry on up the Khyber and The Ship of fools.... ;-)

      All the best. Aly

    1. David, the Hanse Museum has one of the most people friendly exhibition areas I have ever been to ... it is designed for the young and for doddering old gits like me...

  5. I do believe that some of those individuals were on my stag night...they must get around quite a bit because mine was definately not in Hamburg! And I know exactly what you meant about sieges. Some years ago in Paris I visited the Vauban room in the Musée de l'aimée with all those magnificant models of the Vauban forts and my mind immediately drifted to how to play a siege game...wargamers, eh?

    1. I have been to the Vauban room as well...
They should just turn it into a play area for wargames ... actually at my age that would be the perfect stag night...

  8. Great place. Perhaps Michael P will be doing a Lubeck Coat on his next medieval sculpts then! (here hoping...),
