The War of 1812… The U.S. 1st Regiment of Riflemen.

Greetings…

The first (non command) unit of Americans… The U.S. 1st Regiment of Riflemen.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regiment_of_Riflemen

I’ve always liked this unit … In their green and yellow trimmed hunting shirts… Very different from your standard Napoleonic fare…

I am rather pleased with these fellows… they were a real joy to paint.

I will say that the officer does look a lot quirkier than his comrades in the ranks… or maybe he just a bit drinky…

I did think about altering him… for a couple of seconds… just before I slapped the undercoat on. 😁

Captain Drinkmore has however grown on me…

The Hunting Shirts are… Citadel… Loren Forest.

  1. This is a handsome bunch of riflemen, Aly. Great work!

  2. Yes, really picturesque in their uniforms, so distant from the standard regiments of the Napoleonic era ... They even have a short axe on their belt!
But the real question remains: will the officer be able to stay on his feet until he makes contact with the enemy, or will he fall face down after two steps ???

    1. They have a very American feel to them…
If the officer is told that the enemy have stolen his wine… he may lead a daring charge…😁.

      All the best. Aly

    1. They are indeed Matt…
I read somewhere that there were some American volunteers captured outside New Orleans dressed in Gingham checked hunting shirts… they had been made up by the wives of the county and this was the only material at hand… with that in mind green and yellow seem quite sensible 😁

      All the best. Aly

  5. A splendid start to the American force! Captain Drinkmore is surely destined to rival even Flashman for notoriety or fame?

Now that I have given him a name he is bound to develop a character all on his own… he will certainly be a great man…even if it is only in his own mind 😁

  6. They look very fine indeed Sir! Captain Drinkmore does sound like a character in a Carry On movie... and all the better for that!

You certainly couldn’t mistake the uniform for urban camouflage 😁

  9. The officer does seem to hsve drunk a little courage before battle but the Sergeant looks the very competent sort and should be able to keep the boys in hand.

    An excellent next step.

I think everyone knows it is the Sergeant who is in charge… and he could probably out drink the Captain…

  10. That's a great looking unit Aly, with the hunting shirts and shako (?) making something rather unique to the theatre concerned.

I thought I would get a couple of fairly easy units done before I start on the British line infantry…
The War of 1812 has a good mix of relatively simple uniforms and ones covered in braid and piping…

I alway thought it was a shame that Minifigs never made any 20/25mm War of 1812…
I never fancied doing it with their 15mm range…

    2. Agreed, I am a great fan of their 25mm AWI figures.

  15. A bit late to the party Aly but the Knuckleduster figures have come up very nicely. If people think these are a bit "fluoro" they should see mine - I based the green off several references on line but I suspect they may be a bit over the top - they would be safe enough doing maintenance work on the M4 though!.....https://1808534.blogspot.com/2017/04/blog-post.html

Yours are certainly a bit more citron than mine… the various images I’ve looked at have the colour going from a pale grey green all the way through to bottle green…
I suspect that in the field there would have been a fair bit of variation…
I am tempted to do the Humphreyville’s Hussars for the Americans…
A parrot green uniform with a red pelisse and what looks like a Polish style czapka… 😀

      All the best. Aly

  16. Very nice Aly. They certainly are very fetching with that yellow trim. Drinkmore reminds me of a character in one of the Sharpe episodes - a junior officer who was fond of a tipple who explained his inability to stand up straight by saying “I seem to attract the wind more than most”.

I think Drinkmore is allergic to brandy… after a couple of bottles he goes blind 😳

  17. Where are the aircraft carriers?

    ReplyDelete

    1. They spent the whole war bottled up in Chesapeake Bay waiting for the invention of powered flight…
Although I believe some were used as platforms to launch Hot Air Balloons during the American Civil War…
      😁

Excellent work on this - looks great

  18. These fine fellows would fit in quite well with an Elvis rock n roll show with all of that fringe! A good friend of mine did a few units for the War of 1812 and if I remember correctly there was even a unit with purple hunting shirts - very fancy! Looking good Aly, keep them coming.

They would fit well for… Battle of New Orleans the Musical… I’m surprised no one has done it yet 😂…
