ALY MORRISON'S "BUTTERFLY" ADVENTURES IN THE WORLD OF WARGAMES AND TOY SOLDIERS

Aly's Brown Liquid

I thought that I would put the recipe for Aly's Brown Liquid here to save people hunting though all the old posts to find it...

Aly's Brown Liquid...

40% Agrax Earthshade, 40% Seraphim Sepia and 20% Lahmian Medium...
The final ingredient is a few drops of Drakenhof Nightshade...
The colour you are looking for is not quite Brown any more but not entirely Payne's grey.
I usually put in a drop at a time and check the colour on a piece of white plastic or paper.

  3. I have tried a similar artists oil mix…well diluted…on model AFV’s.
It worked well… but took a while to dry.

    All the best. Aly

  5. Thread / topic necromancy incoming! I have used this and like it - so thanks, but where do you think it's true place is compared to "Marine Juice"...another composite wash which I believe is a mix of Nuln oil / Dark Tone, Reikland fleshshade and Lahmian medium?

    1. Thank you Simon…
      I haven’t tried ‘ Marine Juice’ so I can’t really make any comparisons…
I may mix some up and try it out for myself.

      All the best. Aly

    2. I am getting to the end of my batch of Aly's Brown Liquid. I have mixed up Marine Juice, which I don't like as much as I think it lacks the warmth. I would be interested to know if you have an updated recipe as it has been said that Agrax Earthshade has changed enough that it doesn't work as well in these cocktails as it used to.

      Many thanks,
      Andy

    3. Hi Andy…
I must pick up some ‘new’ Agrax and see how it works…
When I started mixing batches of Alys Brown Liquid I bought loads of the colours I needed…
As a paint addict I naturally fear that the recipe will be changed so I always buy way more than is necessary 😁.
The only comments I have heard have been about how it flows rather than the colour itself…

      All the best. Aly

    4. Fab, thanks Aly, I'll give it a go when I stick my next order in.

      Much appreciated. :)

  6. I'll report back as to how well the new formula works, as I've run out of my mix using the old pots.

    1. I’ve actually just finished mixing up a new supply for myself…
      I certainly go through quite a lot…
I have experimented on one of my pots by adding some AK Interactive Ultra Matt to the mix… I am curious to see how the different finish helps you read the details across the model… Especially on the more modern plastic figures…

Let me know how you get on…

      All the best. Aly

    2. …and how much AK varnish did you add?

    3. The best description would be a good squirt 🙀
I haven’t tried it out on any figures yet…
I may have to wait until after my Cataract surgery…

      All the best. Aly

  7. My new paints came today and are mixed. It is browner, so either there is more pigment in the Agrax, or less in the Sepia. Given that they have already ruined Nuln Oil, my money is on less pigment in the seraphim sepia. It does not flow as well either , but last time I used Windsor and Newton Matt medium. Either way, I added 3 drops of AK Interactive Flow Improver, and that did the job. Now I have to pour some off and test mix something yellow in, either ink or one of the contrasts to get back to the lighter shade, or add more sepia.

    1. This is the thing that feeds my “ They are going to change the recipe “ for no good reason paranoia…
And why I always mix up large batches when I mix something that works…
I suppose you could call it fluid science…
Although I just think they should leave it alone if it works…
But that doesn’t seem to be the ‘ modern ‘ way…

I will definitely post on how my new mixes work…

      All the best. Aly

  8. Ach, we both know it was GW saving money while making more. Such a pity, as the originals were classics. Mephiston Red is my absolute favourite red, so I’m going to have to stock up on that.
Anyway, I poured a quarter of my mix into a new container, and added the same quantity of seraphim sepia and some yellow army painter Speedpaint. Still too brown. Finally, I added three good drops of Bad Moon Yellow, and it’s almost matching. My original old Agrax always seemed a bit under pigmented, so I expect the new one is actually better.

  9. A month or so ago I made a new batch up. Sonic Sledgehammer did a review of the new Agrax Earthshade on YouTube where he mentioned mixing it 50/50 with Lahmian Medium. SO I figured I would exchange 1 bottle of Agraxe Earthshade for a bottle of Lahmian medium, and that would give me the original results. The end result was not the same. It flowed very nicely, but there wasn't quite the same tone, too light. I poured in half a bottle more of the new Agrax, and the result was good, and that is what I am currently using.
