ALY MORRISON'S "BUTTERFLY" ADVENTURES IN THE WORLD OF WARGAMES AND TOY SOLDIERS

Aly's Brown Liquid

I thought that I would put the recipe for Aly's Brown Liquid here to save people hunting though all the old posts to find it...

Aly's Brown Liquid...

40% Agrax Earthshade, 40% Seraphim Sepia and 20% Lahmian Medium...
The final ingredient is a few drops of Drakenhof Nightshade...
The colour you are looking for is not quite Brown any more but not entirely Payne's grey.
I usually put in a drop at a time and check the colour on a piece of white plastic or paper.

  3. I might try this mix out with some of my artist oils and the originals just to see what kind of finish they give for both mediums.

    1. I have tried a similar artists oil mix…well diluted…on model AFV’s.
It worked well… but took a while to dry.

      All the best. Aly

    2. I'm thinking if one were to add a little drop of Alkyd to the oil wash, it would "dry to touch" so to speak overnight or faster. You can get it in matte variety since it tends to dry more glossy but I like to spray my minis with matte varnish after anyway to tone down ink gloss and then go back by hand over metallic with gloss varnish.

For military and realism oil washes would be quite ideal, although on smaller scales it would still look just as good. Oil can be tricky though I admit, probably one of the hardest mediums to master next to watercolor.
