Hurrah! A Game… Lion Rampant…

Greetings…

I have managed to tidy up enough to be able to invite some friends around for a game…Hurrah!

It will be a little bash using the new version of Lion Rampant…

None of my chums have played Lion Rampant before so I will be umpiring… it’s a good chance to introduce people to a new game and it also gives me the opportunity to test out the new version of the game….

The game will be happening tomorrow (Friday)…

Here are a couple of shots of the table…

It’s a simple scenario…

The Sassanids must destroy the Temple and the Villa… The Romans must stop them.

As I am not playing we might see some decent dice rolling… 😁

All the best.  Aly

Lion Rampant… The Villa.

Greetings…

While I’ve been tidying things up in the wargames room in preparation for some building work later in the year… I realised that I hadn’t taken any pictures of my finished Roman Villa…

So here we are…

I am very pleased with the way it has turned out

It has been painted in the same way as my Roman Temple…

https://alystoysoldiers.blogspot.com/2020/12/lion-rampant-my-first-roman-building.html

The Villa is from Warbases… It is the Hurlingstone Villa but with extra small store rooms, some walls and a pool.

I was originally going to have the Hurlingstone Villa with just additional walls and the gate , but in the end I combined them all into one.

https://warbases.co.uk/product/hurlingstone-villa/

The water in the pond is Woodland Scenics Realistic Water…https://woodlandscenics.woodlandscenics.com/show/item/C1211

I got mine from Amazon

It’s the first time I have used this and I rather happy with the results… next time I may be a bit more adventurous.

The amphorae and bits and pieces came from Magister Militiumhttps://www.magistermilitum.com/era.html?cat%5B0%5D=61929

Lion Rampant 3rd Century… Second try

 Greetings…

I have eventually got around to finishing off my little Lion Rampant solo play test…

I am pleased with how things went…

It has taken me a while to finish it as I have been slowly clearing the wargames room in preparation for some building work later in the year… I will of course leave the important things till last…

You know the kind of thing… Wargames table …Terrain …. Toys…

Anyway here are some pictures… And as it’s blogger they will be in no particular order…

Here are the last two…

I decided to end the game if a commander was killed…

The Romans look to be in for a bit of a kicking here….

And yes they lost the combat…

So did the Sassanid commander…

I will set up my photo booth and take pictures of the few toys that are painted…

I also have a bit of nostalgia lined up…

All the best    Aly

Lion Rampant 3rd Century... First try

 Greetings...

As I have now painted up enough figures for two small forces, I thought that I would have a little solo game to see how they perform...

It’s been a while since I have played Lion Rampant or any of its variants, so this was a nice opportunity to refresh myself of the rules...

I got the Roman and Sassanid stats from the I live With Cats blog...

http://ilivewithcats.blogspot.com/search/label/romans

So each force was six units strong and I played them pretty much as basic stats...

I used playing cards to decide whose move it was to add a little uncertainty... Red cards for Rome and Black cards for the Sassanids.

When a unit failed an activation roll ... Instead of the turn going to the other side... I turned another card over.

This is the initial set up after the first move... no subtle tactics...
More a case of “let’s get in these and see what happens.”

The Sassanids

The Romans
The Sassanid light cavalry make a move towards the Roman Temple.
Due to... predictable activation roll fails... this is where they stay for a bit.

Sassanid heavies moving forwards slowly.
It does make a nice picture though.

The Romans start a steady advance.

Sassanid skirmishers in the woods.

The Sassanid Levy Infantry... loiter.

The Roman Noble Horse charge the Sassanid Cataphracts.
And bounce off.

Encouraged by this the Cataphracts decide they want to move forward

The Roman and Sassanid Light Horse skirmish with little effect.

The Roman Infantry look tough.

The Sassanid Levy... loiter...sigh!

Having gotten the worst of the skirmishing.
The Sassanid Light Horse fall back

My Leader eyes up some Romans as a possible target.

The Sassanid Levy decide to have ago at the Roman Auxilia.
What could possibly go wrong?

A Raven’s eye view of the battlefield.

Having managed to charge the Romans...
The Levy decide they may have bitten of more than they could chew.

Sadly no before picture...
But here is the after.
The Sassanid leader has disappeared in a puff of...
Death!

At this point I decided that this was a good point to call a halt to the action.

I thought that the cards work well for the turn sequence, but by the way my dice were rolling the basic Lion Rampant none activation result felt a bit brutal... next time I will lift the Double One/Double Six rule from Pikeman’s Lament and see how that works... I also think that the Cataphracts could be a bit more aggressive/easier to move.
I also need more Light Horse for the Sassanids.

I really enjoyed this it was nice to see the toys on the table... I already feel like painting more up.
I shall set up a new table and have another game...

All the best.   Aly

Lion Rampant... My First Roman Building.

 Greetings...

I have finished the first Roman building for this project...

It’s a Temple from Warbases Veni Vidi Vici Range...

https://warbases.co.uk/product/roman-temple/

This was a lot of fun to build and I am very pleased with the result...

The roof was covered with Pantiles from Wills Model Railway Accessory’s...
Mine came from... www.trainshop.co.uk

The walls were given some texture using light weight Polyfilla and I painted it using various earth, cream, grey and ochre Shades from Pebeo Studio Acrylics...

The Amphorae came from Magister Militum

The base was made from a 3mm cake board cut to size...

I am currently working on a Roman Villa...

All the best.   Aly
