The War of 1812… The Canadian Voltigeurs.

Greetings…

Here we have my next War of 1812 unit… The Canadian Voltigeurs.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canadian_Voltigeurs

I’ve gone for another regiment with a relatively simple uniform…

I rather like the practical grey colour combined with the bearskin cap…which is not something I would have thought was woodland friendly… but it looks great.

The Officers Uniform is… Foundry… Forest Green 26B.

The Rank and File Uniforms and Greatcoats are… Citadel… Administratum Grey.

The Knapsacks are… Foundry… Moss Light 29C.

The Sashes are… Citadel… Mephiston Red.

The Water Bottles are… Foundry… Sky Blue Light 21C.

The Water Bottle Strap is… Citadel… Skrag Brown.

The Muskets are… Citadel… Mournfang Brown.

This has been another very enjoyable unit to paint… the simple uniforms are actually in their own way quite colourful on the finished figures.

Also the officer looks relatively sober…

The figures are from Knuckleduster Miniatures

The paints are Wargames Foundry and Citadel...

The bases are as always...

  1. A favourite unit and these look very natty.

Bears wear fur on their heads when they roam the woods so it must be suitable. I've seen various portrals of them but only 1 picture of a surviving on, it looked rather shorter than these but who knows?

In that same book (published by a museum or historical society I think but it was decades ago) it had some data on recuits, name, occupation, description etc. Several recruits were listed as dark skin, curley black hair so I added an African-Canadian to my little unit. At that time period probably sons of black loyalists.

    1. Thank you Ross…
Given the material that Napoleonic era caps and hats were made of… I do wonder if there is a degree of shrinkage with age…
Most original examples I’ve seen are quite inflexible and appear to be made for people with tiny little heads…
That’s a nice idea…adding African-Canadians to your unit…I know of a unit raised in the Niagara Region which I believe were later attached the the Royal Engineers and there were certainly African-Americans recruited around New Orleans

      All the best. Aly

    2. Rumsy's corps. Roundhats and Blue coatees. Just right for adding confusion during a raid on a misty morning.

  2. They do look rather fetching in their grey uniforms.

  3. You've made a great job of those rather weird sculpts. Much preferred the Brigade Games ones for my collection. But, each to their own as ever. What's next I wonder Aly?

      Quirky yes … weird possibly…
As lovely as the Brigade figures are I think these chaps suit my skirmish game plans better…
      Next?…. Maybe something with horses…

      All the best. Aly

  4. Another nice unit Aly and the muted palette works nicely. However the hats certainly look impractical for use in woodland.

I’m not sure how many hats in this period were actually that suitable for the woods… but they do look pretty.

  5. This too is a very original unit. In fact in the illustration on the wikipaedia page the cap would appear a little shorter than that of your soldiers, as Ross already said. Does this cap derive from the uniforms of Napoleonic France?
Finally, it is obvious that the officer of the unit is sober: his men have bottles of water on their belts (unless they have filled them with something else ...)

    1. More likely a cross of British fusilier/grenadier caps and some of fur caps worn by some 18th/19thC Canadiens in the woods.

    2. As Ross says… the caps seem to be close to the type worn by British Fusiliers/Grenadiers especially those from the time of the American War of Independence…
Maybe this officer is the only sober one in the unit 😁

      Sorry Helen…
That’s happened before… usually after I get a “sorry there’s been a problem “ message…for some reason Blogger has just repeated/ copied my previous reply… to Stuart… and posted it instead of my reply to you.

      So…

      Thank you Helen…
      All the best. Aly.

    4. Thanks Aly. Just on another note, Its interesting that my security system will let me see your blogger, but I can't see others as they may infect our computer. Look forward in seeing additional units in time.

      Cheers,
      Helen

  10. The grey may not be woodland friendly, but definitely friendly to paint Aly! Good to see the project going forward.

  12. Another really nice job Aly, how are you enjoying the Knuckleduster figures? I like the lighter shade of grey you have used, mine was darker and I think yours is nicer - see here to compare https://1808534.blogspot.com/2017/05/war-of-1812-second-unit-of-canadian.html...my figures are primarily OG but I added one base of KD to each of my two units

    1. Thank you Keith…

I am finding the Knuckleduster figures really easy to paint…
I think the colour of your uniforms is probably closer to what they would have worn… I wanted mine to be a bit more visible on the table.

      All the best. Aly
