The War of Spanish Succession... More Cavalry.

Greetings...

I have now based up two more cavalry units for my French army...  one French and one Spanish.

The French Gendarmes De La Garde...

This unit saw action at...
Ramillies...1706
Oudenarde...1708
Malplaquet...1709

The Spanish Cavalry Regiment Toulongeon.

They fought at Ramillies... alas I know none of their other actions.

Both these units were painted by Art Master Studio...

As with the previous two units they only needed a tiny bit of touching up then the leather goods were varnished.
Again I am very pleased with these and they have certainly saved me a lot of time.

The standards were made by me based on the Robert Hall plates from the Pike And Shot Society.

The miniatures are as always Front Rank...

The bases are from Warbases...

So... There are a couple more infantry units on the painting table...plus some French Command... Hurrah!

All the best   Aly.

  4. Very nice additions, and always nice to see some Spanish allies in there. Their presence is quite often lost among the French and Bavarians.

  6. Lovely pair of units, coming thick and fast, maybe I was being pessimistic saying 2020 for a game after all!

    1. Thank you Mark...

The flags are a combination of scanning, resizing, mirroring (if necessary),redrawing (where necessary) and a fair bit of recolouring- I am not a great fan of overly shaded flags so this is where a lot of the time goes...
      All done using Photoshop.

      All the best. Aly

  8. Hi Aly,
superb stuff of course but we expect no less of you (and another vote for the Spanish - a very under-rated and rare army on the table but with lots of gorgeous uniforms and heroic actions. One almost needs special rules for Spanish commanders - a sort of heaven or hell between the indolent and immobile and the insanely brave and headstrong. And then there is the incredible art work from Ferrer Dalmau. (Perhaps your next regiment should be the Spanish Horse Grenadiers - uniforms the same as their French equivalent and finally disbanded in the 1740's largely because of their propensity for getting themselves wiped out.
I have a serious question though - to you in your role of High Priest of the Butterfly Sect. I have been thinking about precisely these figures for a couple of days - specifically the French Guard cavalry units and wondering about using them for the SYW. I much prefer the movement in them versus their later counterpart from the same stable (hihi - did you see the subtle sort of pun?) - and although for all officers etc I know I am looking at head swaps or wig reduction (if not whig reduction for the Scots company!)to my mind the WSS uniforms capture better the slightly antiquated look of the French Guard Cavalry by the middle of the 18th century.
So O'Guru (the Hibernian Wise Man) - would you do it or not? What do you think?
    Best regards
    Chris

    1. Hi Chris...
Yes looking at the figures I think you could get away with it...
I can see a lot of painful head swaps ahead for you but it will be worth it if it gets you what you want...

When I delve back into the WSS I will certainly want to add some more Spanish Units... some Portuguese would be interesting as well.

      All the best. Aly

  9. Many thanks Aly - decapitation has become for me a whole sub-set of the hobby over the years, although recently I did stop to think when I found myself re-attaching a head to the figure it came off in the first place!
Certainly go for the Horse Grenadiers - Front Rank are perfect - the Royal Guards are based on the French - with Spanish, Italian and Walloon companies in place of the Scots and French etc! - The carabineers are tempting because they were also suicidal but the tops have to be the Dragoons - real not so mellow yellow! with weird hats for the Grenadier troop.
Portuguese are fun too - lots of different colours. (Green for Armada - AND we have the colours for them, and unusually for an infantry regiment they seem to have had trumpets and drums… and..) I could go on ad infinitum but I suppose I had better go out to do some panic buying. If I can help you with anything Spanish or Lusitanian when you flutter back to it - give me a shout (you can always find me FB or gungadin@pt.lu).
