ALY MORRISON'S "BUTTERFLY" ADVENTURES IN THE WORLD OF WARGAMES AND TOY SOLDIERS

Shiny Napoleonics... French Lancers and Artillery.

Greetings...

Something shiny for the new year...

Its been a while since I posted anything about my Shiny Napoleonic project... I have been very slowly working away on further test pieces... Some which didn't pass muster and others like these which did.

5th Lancers of the Line...

These are Lamming Miniatures... I have admit that they didn't look much when I got them...
But they were cheap...

After a good bath and brush up in Dettol...

Plus some new pieces for command...

The lances were replaced and pennants added...

The miniatures were then given an undercoat of Tamiya Nato Brown spray paint...

The horses were given a number of brown and red washes until I was satisfied with the colour (these were painted in the pre Contrast days)
The officers horse was painted black and the trumpeters... Citadel... Administratum Grey.
Tunics and Overalls were... Citadel... Caliban Green.
Facings and Trumpeters Tunic were... Foundry... Sky Blue 21B.
Carbines... Citadel... Mournfang Brown.
Sheepskins Belts Etc... Citadel... Pallid Wych Flesh.
Red Bits... Citadel... Evil Sunz Scarlet.
The Stands were... Citadel... Lorien Forest.

Everything was given a wash of Aly's Brown Liquid.

Then highlighted with the original colours...

Then made Shiny...

The Standard is from GMB Designs...

French Artillery...

The Uniform was... Citadel... Cantor Blue...
With a wash of... Citadel... Drakenhof Nightshade.
Facings etc... Citadel... Evil Sunz Scarlet.

I also painted an ADC...

The paints are Wargames Foundry and Citadel...

Bases from Warbases...

I am very pleased with these and I think I have pretty much settled on how I want everything to look...

I have found this book to be very useful...

Right... I am going to flutter off and find something else to paint.

All the best  Aly.

  4. Metal - there's always hope in it!
If they were plastics, they would need to be trashed. But these have been brought back from the dead!

If I acquired plastics in that state they would have gone straight in the bin...

  11. Looking at the state of them in the first image, I would hope that they were cheap Aly!

You have certainly brought them back to a shiny version of life though!

Yes they were indeed cheap... and as I have a soft spot for Lamming miniatures , I thought it would be nice to try a bit of renovation.

  12. Each to their own, very nice and all that, just don't see the attraction in primitive castings in C21st. But, if it floats your boat...

  13. Looking at these gives me an almost irresistible urge to pick them up and then push them about a table and roll some dice! Luckily my arms aren't long enough.

    Good start to the year!

  14. A wonderful transformation of those lancers: very charming outcome! I still find it jarring to hear colors applied to historicals named things like "Pallid Wych Flesh" and the like. Just showing my age, I reckon.

I think there have always been strange names for paint... even more so as there is now a lot more choice and companies are trying to protect their IP...
It’s a pale pinky grey white... as opposed to a pale pinky grey yellow ;-)

I actually think that diy paint colours are worse... some of them don’t even give you a clue in the tittle... leapfrog... milkyway galaxy... Hawaiian passion... secret rendezvous ...
Though I would love to see paints called ...loveless marriage or miserable weekend

      All the best. Aly

    2. Good points, all--upon reflection, it's not any different than me using "gunship gray" on my black powder era figures: I'm the pot calling the kettle gray :)

  16. They look splendid Aly - I'm renovating and going through a lot of my 70s armies at the moment though - alas - your efforts put mine in the shade. I guess those artillery and ADC are Minifigs - early MF horses are so elegant! Now - Lorien Green - is that the colour of the models' own base or the colour of the warbase - the search for the ideal 'toy soldier' green goes on.

    1. Thank you Rick...

The base on the figure is Lorien Green.
The warbase is a Wilko’s colour called Urban Jungle...
I undercoated the MDF to seal it first... gave it a couple of good coats of the green... then a spray of Matt varnish.
A bit of a palaver but if you do it in batches it’s not so painful.

      All the best. Aly

I moved on all of my minifigs and lemmings from my original collection some years ago, you have done a fine restauration on these chaps!

When I originally had S Range and Lammings I was mostly into renaissance and medieval wargaming... so a lot of this is lovely and new to me.

  20. Aly,
I absolutely love taking something old and in disrepair and breathing new life into them as you have done with these lancers! I wish I had discovered your blog earlier as I had some Minifig S series British Dragoons needing a home. Are the Lammings comparable in size to the early Minifig S series? I keep reading about them, but have never actually seen any. In any event really enjoyed your blog.

There is indeed a lot of satisfaction in taking the old and making it new again...

There are early Lammings which go very well with S Range and Hintons and the latter Lammings which sit reasonably well with the later Minifigs...
These are later Lamming cavalry With later Minifigs command which actually don’t look out of place with my S Range toys.

      All the best. Aly
