A Slight Distraction... 40mm AWI

Greetings...

I recently picked up a couple of the Front Rank 40mm AWI to see what they were like...
My butterfly decided that it was time to paint them up...

These are lovely... not so little... toy soldiers.
They were a real pleasure to paint... although they took a bit longer than I expected.

Would I paint more of them?

Probably... but not right now... They would certainly make for a nice skirmish based collection.

All the best   Aly

  1. Superb Aly - I have always admired the bigger figures, but am aware that there is nowhere to hide when it comes to painting them - pleas of "Impressionism" don't work in this scale! Anyway - fab.

You are of course correct... there is a lot more painting involved in getting these guys to a good standard...
There are some figures that would look good with a simple toy soldier finish... but not these.
Which is why I will be taking my time putting a collection together...

      All the best. Aly

  2. Nice paint job Aly (as always). I came across a German company Peipp Miniatures that have a nice range of 7YW 45mm figures. Not as detailed as the Front Rank figures but still nice to paint as a break from the smaller stuff. Cheers Greg

  4. Oh yes! Those look very impressive and beautifully painted too. I can imagine playing an AWI version of Sharpe Practice with these.

I was thinking either Rebels and Patriots or Sharpe Practice myself...

  5. A "slight" distraction, but not a little one: wonderfully rendered! I've seen a few games with 40mm figs at conventions: just an amazing spectacle (no less impressive given what it would take to get a gaming-sized collection together).

There is certainly something impressive about seeing large numbers of 40mm figures on the table... I think my collection will be more of a modest size...
I imagine I will paint one or two figures at a time over a fairly long period of time.

      It doesn’t 😂

  17. Great work Aly and welcome to the dark side - skirmish force - yes that’s what I told myself ten years ago as well - the beauty of the one true scale is that the extra effort is rewarded by the fact that you can see it without having to shove it under your nose first - I look forward to watching the evolution
