More New Books...

 Greetings...

Alas I am still not getting a lot of painting in at the moment...

Work has been... well work... and at the end of the day I am mostly up for reading a book, watching a film or listening to some music... of course reading a book with some music on in the background is also an excellent option...

I have however picked up a couple of new books...

The content of both looks to be really good... but I have to say I am not sure about the artwork.

To my taste anyway... the illustrations in one seems rather naive and the other is a bit heavy on the digital art for my liking... each to their own I suppose.

I will read them as I am very interested in the period/subject matter.

Mike Duncan’s The History of Rome Podcast covers this chap in these episodes if you want to know a bit more about him...

My Lion Rampant solo game is still ongoing if a bit slow...

Some action earlier on today...

I have also finished painting and basing my Roman Villa... I will take some pictures when the game is over... also my butterfly is starting to flutter... which is always a good sign.

All the best.  Aly

    1. Byzantine’s have certainly been fluttered over... although not early ones 😁

  4. Saw the Thrax book on the WSS newsletter, quite interested in it I would like to know what you think when you have digested it. Grand to see your 3rd century stuff on the table in action or inaction.

It is always nice to get the toys on the table.😁

  5. One positive side effect of the pandemic, for me, has been the rediscovery of reading actual books: I hadn't realized it until I sat down with one for a purposeful reading session that I really had gotten out of the habit given all the reading I was doing via the web and on the ipad.

    1. There is something really satisfying about holding and reading a good book...
Especially if you are sitting in the garden with a nice glass of wine.

    1. Hi Steve.
I have added a couple of links to Mike Duncan’s A History of Rome podcast where he covers this fellow...
I would recommend the whole series... it is what got me interest in the 3rd Century Romans.

    1. The whole story of the Eastern Roman/ Byzantine empire is fascinating stuff...
And the toys are very pretty...
The good thing about our hobby is that if you don’t feel like painting... you can always read...

  9. The ebb and flow of hobby life. Interesting books but as a wargamer it is hard not to be interested by all military and army books 🙂

    1. One of the things I like about this hobby it that there are so many things that you can still do when you aren’t painting toys.

      I’m never bored...

  10. I feel your pain Aly, I got back to painting recently but due to work and stuff I cannot get myself to finish some of the projects and I end up with reading and watching films :-)

As to books, the graphics indeed look awkward and the figures have strange proportions.
Recently I also got myself some books about AWI, WSS and French-Prussian War just have to find time to read them. I'm a bit worried that one day, the pile of books by my bed side will collapse over night and kill me ;-)

    Best wishes,
    Jan

    1. Hi Jan...
I keep setting myself project deadlines and I get frustrated when I don’t meet them...
      Which is a bit daft... it’s a hobby not a job 😄.
I am enjoying my reading and I finished my Roman Villa... so hurrah.
I think my book mountain is almost as big as the lead one... I fear a landslide 😂.

      All the best. Aly

  11. Interesting pair of books, my first Osprey book was the one on Byzantine armies illustrated by Angus McBride, now there was an awesome illustrator!
