Shiny Napoleonics… French High Command and ADC’s

Greetings…

Here we have a selection of various French High and Lower Command figures…

I’ve been painting these up one or sometimes two at a time when I am not really in the mood to tackle a full unit… I’m finding them quite therapeutic to do … They don’t take too long and they are fun.

Young Captain Malchanceux Bourde…

Berthier…

An Infantry Officer…
This is the first Hinchliffe figure in my collection…

A dismounted 2nd Hussar Office…

A dismounted 5th Hussar Officer…

General Rapp…

General Rapp’s ADC’s…
I’m not sure if he had both at the same time… But I couldn’t make my mind up which one I liked best…
They were converted from a Polish Lancer Officer and a Trumpeter…

Junot…
A Minifigs figure on a converted Garrison horse…

Another first… A Hinton Hunt ADC on an early Garrison horse…

Joachim Murat…

An Officer d’Ordonnance…
I think he started out as a French General…

Napoleon…

I have a few more command types in the shiny lead mountain… So there will be more at sometime in the future…. Of course I still need some for Prussia and Britain…

I am not going to list all the colours that I used for these as it would probably take a couple of weeks to remember and then write out…
But if you have any specific questions…I will try my best to answer them.

The paints are Wargames Foundry and Citadel...
I have actually started making progress with the War of 1812 unit I have been very slowly painting…So hopefully that will get posted soon.

All the best.  Aly

  1. The young Captain seems to have seen something distasteful in his orders? The dappled grey horse is absolutely delightful. Actually it all is. A masterclass in painting. The wife’s just asked me why I don’t make such lovely figures. She very much approves of “shiny” apparently. Do I see Msr Foys “house” green paint on the bases by the way?

    1. I think Malchanceux Bourde was expecting glory, but he just got manoeuvring instead…
Most non wargamers seem to like the shiny…a good thing in my opinion 😁
My bases aren’t exactly Foy Green… but similar…
Urban Jungle from Wilko’s (For the rest of the world… this is a U.K. Hardware and General Goods Store)… I have a couple of litres stashed away… just in case 🙄😁

  2. These look wonderful Aly. I remember painting that Minifigs Murat figure myself as a clueless 13 year old. Yours is what I imagined it would have looked like. How it turned out, not quite the same but I got better.

    1. Thank you Carlo…
I really enjoyed painting that figure… I also had one when I was younger… I just made the uniform up and chose the prettiest colours…mind you isn’t that what Murat did anyway.

  7. Great work Aly, had/have a few lof these - Murat obviously, as I just posted about him a couple of weeks back - I had the Berthier on foot figure too I think. Is your Napoleon a Hinchliffe single piece casting - he surely isnt Minifigs?

    1. Thank you Keith…
Napoleon is indeed a Minifigs… He is from what is referred to as the Intermediate Range, a lovely little figure.

    2. Ok...well, he dies the have what I would term the classic Minifigs look....intermediate I an guessinfpg predates the figures I as buying in the mid to late seventies....

    3. Yes they are indeed the range that comes between the S Range and what is now the current (late 70s) range…

  8. BTW I spotted a whole lot of your favourite old toys for sale on our local eBay, Trade Me - I dont know how the prices compare with UK and the postage may make it too expensive but for what its worth, this should get you there....https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/search?member_listing=205759

    1. Thanks… I had a little look.
I will resist temptation…the prices look similar but I suspect the postage will indeed push the price up.

  9. What a wonderful collection and it’s always nice paint something special when bored or short of time. You’ve done a great job on these full of character. I thought I recognised the early garrison horses nice to see them. Are we to see a few more Hinchliffe creep into the collection ?

They are indeed a lot of fun to paint…
If I find more Hinchliffe that fit in size wise I will certainly add them to the collection…

  10. A splendid gallery of shiny commanders: we recognize some of them as the protagonists of Berthier's tragicomic story of one of the last posts ...
We agree with the previous comments on being spoiled of choice, but one detail that struck us is undoubtedly the quality of the exotic leopard and tiger furs on Junot and Murat's saddles: an accessory all the rage (in 1812)!

I do wonder how many of these furs and skins were actually the real thing…as there appears to be quite a lot of them in circulation.

  16. I was going to say that the dismounted hussars were my favs, but the more I looked, the more I liked--all of 'em! Seeing such a healthy set of not only commanders but also ADCs, etc, makes me wonder if you have ever contemplated creating a game centered on just these in some way (I have a healthy set for my Nappys and have contemplated the idea, but haven't gotten much past the conceptual stage).

  17. Simply spectacular work Aly! Young Captain Malchanceux Bourde will no doubt whip the canaries into fighting trim. Too much goodness to list it all, but I must say the Hinchliffe figure is stunning. Junot on his garrison horse is magnificent as is the Hinton Hunt ADC. I actually think that is an improvement over the original. A very elegant figure now.

Lastly I must tell you I hate you. Your rendition of Murat has ruined him for me. There is no way I can equal that rendition. That very same figure has been on my painting desk as part of a small camp scene for four or five years at least. Now I fear he may never see a brush. Grrrrr!

    Take care my friend!
