An excellent book... And a serious temptation.

When we were in Hamburg earlier this year , our friend Florian Richter showed us this book...

Well what can I say... 'you had me on hello'


And then my friend Johannes got me a copy...


German and Austrian military uniforms 1835-1845


For those of us who like the concept and imagery of  what I have always called Chocolate Box Wars this is an ideal book...
The odd thing of course is that I doubt any of these states with the exception of Austria ever went to war during this period ...
But the uniforms are delightful...


My butterfly mind immediately went to the idea of a 'what if ' collection based on the concept that the Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian wars happened earlier...in those fantastic post Napoleonic uniforms...

I have been wanting to do a couple of 'shiny projects  this year and this could be one of them...


The crazy thing is...WARNING CHEAP COMMERCIAL PLUG... I already make the miniatures... or should I say the components that make the miniatures...

    Excellent looking book Aly. I wonder if it would be suitable to purchase for the Austrian uniforms for my 1848-49 project.

      The Austrian uniforms in the book are all from the 1830's and pre blue trousers for the German regiments... so other than having a lovely book to drool over I am not sure how much help it would be for your 1848 project.

    concerning the participation to a war, in 1830 the revolution and arriving of Louis Philippe 1° on throne, made a partial mobilisation of the great european powers of the Viennna threaty (mainly Prusse, Russia and Austria )and the new french king first task was to reassure other countries that the revolution had realy ended .
    French /Belgian campign in 1831-32 was a tense period too ...a lot of uses ("what if") for those shiny soldiers !!!!

      With uprisings in Poland .Belgium,Portugal,Italy and Spain I am surprised that nothing big kicked off in Germany during the 1830s....

    Thanks for the shout out, Aly! Also, thanks for bringing this book to our attention. It would appear to have some images in common with the L Sachse & Co "Full Color Uniforms of the Prussian Army" (72 Plates from the year 1830); excellent companion volumes, I'm thinking!

    What a wonderful book. It is obvious to me that the reason the German states didn't start anything in the 1830's was that they didn't want to dirty those pretty uniforms. By the late 1860s, when uniforms had adopted a more practical appearance, such considerations went out the window.
