The War of Spanish Succession... Bavarian Infantry Regiment Tattenbach

Plus some thoughts for the new year...

A new year and a new unit for my War of Spanish Succession project...

Bavarian Infantry Regiment Tattenbach...

The Standards and uniform have been taken from the excellent Robert Hall plates that are available from The Pike and Shot Society...
http://www.pikeandshotsociety.org/

I have gone for a much lighter sky blue than is shown in the illustrations... mostly because I like it but also because it will separate them visually from  the French Infantry Regiment Sparre-Allemande.

The Coat... Foundry... 21B Sky Blue.
Facings... Foundry... 4B Ochre.
Stockings and other white bits... Citadel... Pallid Wych Flesh.
Belts... Foundry... Buff Leather 1B.

The miniatures are as always Front Rank...

The paints are Citadel...

And Wargames Foundry

Bases from Warbases...

The Standards were created with the magic of Photoshop.

This brings my War of Spanish Succession totals to...
7 Infantry,1 Dragoon and 1 Cavalry for the French and 7 Infantry, 1 Dragoon , 1 Cavalry and 1 light gun for the allies...
A slow but steady progress... my butterfly shows no desire to flutter away from this one... I will be painting some cavalry and artillery next... my aim is to have enough for a small game by the middle of the year.

So what plans does the butterfly have for me in the coming year...

Shiny Napoleonics...

This is so going to happen this year....

I have been itching to do this for ages, any major Napoleonic collection was for me always going to be Shiny and mostly Minifigs old and new.
Expect something soon...

S.T.S Rebasing...

I have been steadily rebasing all of my Shiny Toy Soldiers Schleswig Holstein War collection to a more flexible format .
They should now work with most of the rules I like using.
I will also be replacing my green baize table top with a flat green painted surface as it has become rather shabby and is hard to keep clean .

Before...

After...

At the end of a year, I have a look at what I have got in the lead mountain and try and make a decision on whether to 'use it' or 'loose it'...
The results of this years considerations are...

3rd Century Romans...

I have had this small but usable collection of 3rd Century Romans sat on the shelf for a couple of years now... Staring at me in frustration as they have no one to fight...
'Use it!'... Yes... I am going to start painting up the Sassanids that have been sat in a box grumbling in frustration because they have no paint and no one to fight.

The French Revolution...

I really like this unit but I somehow lost heart with this project... I have no idea why.
But I am going to give it another chance.
I have been reading through Napoleons Rules of War by Charles Galemmo and I rather like the system so this could be the way to go... we will see.

A Very British Civil War...

'Loose It!'... I cant see myself doing anything with this box of lead that has been pining away in the cellar since I bought them over a hundred years ago... fortunately I have found a good home for them.

I have also been clearing a lot of  photos out of my phone... included in those are some unseen footage from the three campaigns that Alan and Michael put on in the last year and a bit... I will be posting some of these soon.
I will also be posting an account of our last full wargame of the 2018... Possibly the most complete defeat that I have ever suffered.

All the best   Aly

  1. Aly, your Bavarian regiment is beautiful! Love the shade of blue for the coats.

"Use it or Lose" I like that! I would enjoy seeing your FRW project grow in 2019. Are the Austrians from Eureka Miniatures? I have one battalion of these fellows primered but no motivation to paint them since my FRW project is in 18mm. I should "Lose it!"

    1. Thank you Jonathan...
I started use it or loose it because I don’t really have the space to have to much stuff just laying around... I also apply the same principle to music, films and books.
It certainly helps focus the mind on what is actually important to you... and it helps keep the butterfly in check.... mostly.

      All the best. Aly

    2. Oh!... yes the Austrians are from Eureka... they are really nice ...and very easy to paint which makes it even harder to understand why I lost my motivation...
You are in pretty deep with your 18mm so jumping to 28mm would be a rather drastic change in direction... I think 'loose it' ;-)

  2. Lovely light blue regiment of Bavarians! I'm afraid I am more of the use it or leave it in a box in the loft for years, I have found a good home for some lovely sisters of battle that I was never going to paint,so maybe a good sign! Oh and your banners are excellent!

    1. Thank you Iain...
If I can I prefer to pass my unwanted toys on to a ‘good home’...
So in some ways it’s not use it or loose it... it’s offloading my stuff onto someone else... ;-) ;-)

  3. Like the Bavarians. I just wonder how long it is before the inner butterfly tramples all over your plans?

I think that the only thing that is certain, is that the War of Spanish Succession will continue.

  4. Fantastic WSS unit as always Aly - sorry, I cant see the attraction of the glossy old style figures but I know lots of people do, so good luck with that project too!

Yes shiny toys aren’t to everyone’s taste but I have always liked them... it’s great that our hobby is such a broad church... so many styles ,periods and scales... each to their own and hurrah for that...
Although I am not sure about 2mm miniatures .

Yes plans.... is it possible to plan for a plan that might change?
I am quite certain that the War of Spanish Succession will continue.

I am rather pleased with this unit ... the sky blue with yellow facings is very attractive... I may ‘need’ to add more Bavarians to this collection.

    2. Somehow there is always a "need" with WSS Bavarians. I stated out intending to do just a battalion or two and ended up with nine battalions, six cavalry regiments and two guns - the entire Bavarian force at Blenhiem.

  9. Super unit with funky flags, all very tempting but no have resisted and will resist :~)

  11. Fantastic looking miniatures particularly the blue coats on the Bavarians, what a wonderful shade.

Could I ask you a couple of questions about an old miniature please? I stumbled across an old oriental halfling miniature, which no matter where I look I cannot find any information about, online or in old catalogues/white dwarves etc. It looks like a companion piece to the solid based Oni halfling that I'm told you sculpted, so I was hoping you'd be able to shed some light on its origins for me?

It's the middle miniature in these photos, flanked by the original oni and the reworked 'Theo' halfling, both of whom are pretty well documented comparitively.

Any info you could give me on it would be amazing, did you sculpt it? was it ever released properly, or was it some sort of test piece? It has such great character, much like the other oriental models you sculpted, I'm trying to collect them all and would love to confirm if it was one of yours.

    All the best,
    Alex

    1. Hi Alex...
Yes ... I made that little chap...
The two Oni along with an Oriental wizard were sculpted by me just after I accepted a job as a Citadel Designer way back in 1983...
I made them in the month before I officially started to see how I liked working in Green Stuff epoxy putty... I had been using Milliput up till that point... they were later released as a blister pack.
They are the first figures that I ever made for Citadel...although my first official release was the Samurai/Oriental Warriors box set.

      All the best. Aly

    2. Thanks Aly, that's exactly what I wanted to hear- I do love it when a theory gets confirmed. As I hinted at above, I think they're lovely sculpts and I kinda wish they had been expanded upon as a range, two (three I suppose including the reworked Theo) just doesn't seem enough for me.

Can you describe the Oriental wizard for me please so I can try to track him down? Since finding out about him I have a new gap in my collection right before the samurai boxed set.

      Thanks again, Alex.

    4. You're a star Aly! Thank you.

He's the one I was hoping you'd identify the wizard as, I love the sculpting on his face and the decorative elements of his robes.
      Thanks again, Alex

You are partially responsible for my rethinking one the French Revolution...
The Romans won’t be a big collection I think that the 3rd century campaigns against the Sassanids are really interesting... I am hoping that the wargaming will be the same.

  13. Just starting on a 28mm WSS project. A couple of units done. Finding your work a great source of inspiration and information. I am using Front Rank miniatures as I really enjoy painting them which is always good for a new project. What figures did you use for the Bavarians? Are they the Front Rank Dutch with the hats trimmed or have I missed them on the Front Rank website?
    Cheers, Richard P

    1. Hi Richard…and thank you.
You can’t really go wrong with the Front Rank WSS range… they are lovely and a joy to paint…
The Bavarians are the WSS Infantry and Dutch figures with the field sign cut off..
