Lion Rampant... Sassanid Command

Greetings...

Hurrah!...
Back to painting some Sassanids....
Yes!... I got a new supply of bases...

I have managed to paint up some Command...

This was a fun couple of pieces to get me back into painting for this project...

The foot figure is an A&A miniature with an Aventine head and shield...

The main colours used were... Citadel... Averland Sunset... Citadel... Pink Horror...
And... Citadel... Lothern Blue.
The Leather Work was a mixture of different browns and deep reds plucked randomly from my paint drawers...

 The miniatures are...
A&A...  https://www.aandaminiatures.co.uk/
Aventine... https://aventineminiatures.co.uk/

The bases are...
Warbases... https://warbases.co.uk/

The Shields and Standard are from...
Little Big Men Studios... https://www.littlebigmenstudios.com/

Next time... A few more Napoleonics...

All the best   Aly

    2. Yes thank you! I’m supposed to go home tomorrow... 16 days in hospital and I’m getting nuts! Anyway hope to get rid of it soon and glad the family is without symptoms.

When I get back home I have loads of minis to paint! Austrian cavalry first!

      Bast wishes,
      Jan

  4. Really lovely work on these Aly - sorry, but when you can turn out figures that look like this, I just don't understand the attraction of the old school "shinies"!....However....have a look at my blog tomorrow for my report on todays game and you will see some genuine glossy troops from 30or 40 years ago, painted by a member of our group who went to the great gaming table in the sky 10-15 years ago, including his multiple battalions of Russian Pavlov Guards - certain members of the group love to repeatedly mention the fact he had several battalions of these troops, despite the fact in reality, there was only one!

    1. Thank you Keith...

The endless debate... to gloss or not to gloss... I like them both.
I once described wargaming to a friend as a large collection of likeable people often divided by the same hobby 😂

I look forward to seeing the Pavlovs...
I must admit I would have more than one regiment of Royal Scots Greys if I could...

  5. These look quite spectacular Aly. I have a collection with both A&A and Gripping Beast which I really love playing with. That early Miniature Wargames cover in the 1980's with the Sassanid Persian army on it in all its shiny glory certainly kept me interested in eventually building one.

      I remember that cover...

What’s not to like about Sassanids.

  7. Cracking work Aly and the colours just work together so well. The shields and flag really make the troops 'pop'.

Though I can take no credit for the flag and shields.

Please please don’t throw it all in...
Think of all those unpainted Carthaginians....commanded by Phil....
      Running away from your Romans...😆

      We need you...

Excellent as always. To gloss or not to gloss? Well I gloss mine before I then Matt them but I have to say I have been tempted on many occasions to leave them shiny as it seems to lift the colours. My old comrade in arms Leigh always left his shiny, his excuse was it allowed us to tell who’s figures they were, but deep down I know he liked the bright colours and the shinyness of it all.

    1. Thank Graham...

For me the choice of varnish is often down to the miniatures in question...
I think that the older (in style as well as age) less detailed miniatures shine like little gems with a gloss varnish but more detailed modern figures can actually loose something...
I also use gloss to bring out the contrast between leather and metal and the cloth on my models...
It’s really all about whatever puts a smile on your face...

  11. Those are really nice Aly but its irresponsible of you to showcase such lovely Sassanid figures to those of us who are so impressionable and so easily led down to path of shiny temptation!

Me trying to tempt you into collecting and painting beautiful and interesting subjects like the Sassanids and 3rd Century Romans... Really.?😈😈😈...

  12. You have set impossible standards for us again. I have five Russian horse archers for Grunwald on the painting desk, and I would happy if they came out half this well!
