Greetings...
Yet another unit finished for this project...
More Sassanid Spearmen... this time they are Unarmoured.
I decided to give these guys simple white clothes... a nice quick paint job.
Well that is what I thought... they actually took a lot longer than I thought they would.
I can’t think of a reason why... they were a pleasure to paint in fact... maybe that was it.... I got lost in the moment...
Anyway they are done and I am very pleased with them... they have a bit of a rowdy look about them, which probably means that they will run at the first throw of the dice....
I recon that I now have (more than) enough units for a game... so I will probably take a pause from painting more and get them on the table...
A couple of solo games then one (a certain defeat ) with my daughter...
The White bits are... Citadel... Pallid, Wych Flesh.
The Leather goods are... Citadel... Skrag Brown and Doombull Brown.
The body of the Shields and the Spears are... Foundry... Spearshaft Light 13C.
Then it’s a wash with Aly’s Brown Liquid and highlighting with the original shades... the white was given an extra highlight with added pure white...
The miniatures are...
Aventine... https://aventineminiatures.co.uk/
The bases are...
Warbases... https://warbases.co.uk/
The Shield Transfers are from...
Little Big Men Studios... https://www.littlebigmenstudios.com/
The paints are Wargames Foundry and Citadel...

Next up.... probably something shiny.
All the best Aly
Nice work, Aly! I like the work on the whites a lot. Awaiting their trial in battle.
ReplyDeleteThank you Jonathan...
DeleteI have a feeling that basic levy spear are all bravado and bluster....😄
All the best. Aly
Some sassy Sassanians there Aly.
ReplyDeleteThank you Phil...
DeleteThat’s the kind of phrase that causes dentures to disengage...😱🤭
All the best. Aly
Nice work Aly, lovely white 🙂 and nice big spears which won’t break
ReplyDeleteThank you Matt...
DeleteThe spears might not break... but I am not so sure about the men.
All the best. Aly
Lovely work Aly! I like the big shields on these. What were they made of? Something like willow withes bound together?
ReplyDeleteBest wishes,
Jan
Based on finds at Dura-Europas, they were reeds through leather
DeleteThanks! Interesting stuff!
DeleteJan
Thank you Jan...
DeleteI had originally just assumed that the shields were wooden boards covered with leather ...
But capensarum’s description makes far more sense... they would probably be a lot lighter and more manageable...
Although with my dice throwing they may as well be made of paper 😂
All the best. Aly
Haha General Luckless! ;-)
DeleteI chose it myself 😂🤣😂...
DeleteWhen I command the French I am known as Malchanceux...
Yes! I experienced your rolls ;-)
DeleteAll the best,
Jan
"got lost in the moment" the best feeling when painting I think and the excellent results reflect it..
ReplyDeleteThank you Ross...
DeleteYes it’s a nice place to be...
All the best. Aly
Grand effort on the Sassanids! White too, my absolutely least favourite colour to work with!
ReplyDeleteThank you David...
DeleteI find Orange a bit tricky... fortunately there aren’t many/any Orange uniformed armies out there... unless you go for Sci-Fi...
All the best. Aly
More lovely troops Aly and I agree with Jan, I particularly like the enormous shields - must have been hard work to hump around a battlefield though....as for gaming, solo seems like the safest idea for you!
ReplyDeleteThank you Keith...
DeleteI imagine you marched to a certain point planted yours shield in the ground... and stayed put.
I find that solo games are a good way to get familiar with the rules... I suspect it will be next year before I can have a face to face game.
All the best. Aly
Really, really well painted Ally. The dragon standard and shields are particularly impressive.
ReplyDeleteRegards, James
Thank you James...
DeleteThis whole project has been really fun to paint.
All the best. Aly
Lovely looking Sassanid spearmen! Good luck with your remote game with your daughter, your men march confident in your abilities!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Thank you Iain...
DeleteIf my Lion Rampant game is anything thing like the one I am having with her now... I’m doomed...😂
All the best. Aly
Great looking unit. I do like that leader, looks like he is beckoning is foeman towards him.
ReplyDeleteThank you Paul...
DeleteThe Aventine command figures are always quite characterful...
All the best. Aly
Great looking troops Aly.
ReplyDeleteThank you Ray...
DeleteAll the best. Aly
Excellent additions to your force, Aly! The whit tunics look great
ReplyDeleteThank you Nick...
DeleteAll the best. Aly
Very nice Aly and I shall look forward to the Lion Rampant games. I haven’t fought against Sassanids for years, lots of nasty cavalry and under the old WRG rules big 48 figure levy units - crap fighters but immoveable objects.
ReplyDeleteThank you Graham...
ReplyDeleteI agree with the good cavalry... except there was always to many cataphracts and not enough lights...
From what I’ve read recently the infantry were not all levy... there was a good core of professionals in most armies.
As soon as Mharaid has finished pounding me into the ground in our current game of Drums and Shakos 😂... I will get some solo games started.
All the best. Aly
