Shiny Napoleonics... Von Lützow’s Freikorps

 Greetings...

A nice new unit for my Shiny Napoleonics...

Von Lützow’s Freikorps...

I first saw this stylish unit painted in the shiny style on the Hinton Spieler blog...

https://thehintonspieler.blogspot.com/2017/08/lutzowers-at-last.html

Matthew (Wellington Man) did such a splendid job that I new I must have a unit like them in my collection...

My battalion was made using Minifigs as opposed to Hinton Hunts...

The original figure was a Brunswicker wearing the early uniform used in the Peninsular...

I removed the plume and built up a Prussian style shako cover using Green Stuff, I also cut off the braid on the front of the coat and the chin scales...

As you can see I didn’t strip them as the paint had been applied quite thinly...

The hats were sculpted over three or four days so it didn’t feel like a task.

My test figure for the uniform colour was...

Kapitän Daumen hoch...

I was very pleased with the results and quickly moved on to the whole unit...

“sehr guter alter Junge“

The standard was... well... copied from Wellington Man 😁

With a little help from a picture I found on line...

Ok...  So... There’s no way I could screw up here then... is there?

And the stupid mistake is................................Pretty obvious!

My only (pathetic) excuse is that I haven’t done any lettering for a while and I was to focused on that to notice that the damn thing was upside down...

Anyway... After some swearing and a few subtle reminders...

The finished standard...

Hurra! (Dummkopf)...

The Uniform is a base coat of... Citadel... The Fang.

Which was  given two coats of... Citadel... Contrast... Black Templar...

This gives a nice blueish black...

The Piping is... Citadel... Evil Sunz Scarlet.

The Belts are just painted pure Black...

The Standard is... Citadel... Evil Sunz Scarlet and pure Black.

The Standard Fringe and Lettering is... Citadel... Averland Sunset...

Highlighted by adding some... Wargames Foundry... Lemon Light 1C.

I have to say that I am really really pleased with these... I was a bit unsure about how the gloss varnish would look over the Contrast Colours... but it worked a treat.

I also stole another idea from Wellington Man... I have no shame...

I rebased my Lamming Neapolitans on slightly thinner bases so that now they don’t tower over their Minifigs allies, I also took the time to correct a couple of things with the paint job that were bothering me...

The bases are as always...

The paints are Wargames Foundry and Citadel...

I have more shiny things to come and hopefully a game report...

All the best.    Aly

  2. Nice work Aly - you will enjoy some of the images on my blog of our Napoleonic game at Tarawera - lots n lots of shiny Minfigs Russians and Bavarians, all painted 30+ years ago by a now departed veteran wargaming mate of Marks called Jim Shaw (I only knew him very slightly) who had served in RN Submarines during WW2

  6. Lovely stuff Aly. I don’t for a second think you erred at all and see through your cunning plan. That flag will be perfect down under...you are planning an Antipodean invasion!

  8. Nice! Time ago my club-friend did the Lutzow Freikjorps for his Prussian army (https://zumbefehl.blogspot.com/2017/11/lutzow-freikorps.html?fbclid=IwAR0R7HEVXkGRKSjq6ryyMRPw8nI5nsf5pXLjHWeF83q8gBExtdB3bscNcUE). As far as I remember, they hav't done much in the battle though ;-)

    Best wishes,

  10. Stealing inspiration from Wellington Man is never a bad thing! As for the flag, been there done that. At least you caught it before mounting it on the figure! You must be getting quite the army by now. When do we get to see them in a glorious shiny review?

  11. Splendid work there, especially the lettering on the flag!

  12. Splendid indeed! Drawing inspiration from some one else's work, with credit of course, is the best compliment you can make.

Are thise S range? They don't look quite as the tubby chubby as the (then) new Minifigs that inspired me to switch to Garrison. These I would have dreamed over.

These are indeed S Range... I also have what are referred to as Intermediate Range figures which I personally think are some of the nicest stuff Minifigs made...

      All the best. Aly.

  17. 'Sehr guter alte junger' indeed, Aly! What an absolutely superb result.
If it's any consolation, I made exactly the same mistake the first time I painted my Lutzower flag. The black seems to want to be on the top for some reason. Perhaps the spirit of von Lutzow is trying to tell us something?
    Best regards

wonderful figures! I would like to give a try to my old minifigs.
What green colour did you use for the base, it is very old scoollish!

    1. Thank you Stefano...

The green on the figures base is Citadel Lorain Forest...
The green on the unit stand is a colour called Urban Jungle... which is from an own brand paint range from a UK Hardware/Household chain called Wilko’s.

      All the best. Aly
