Shiny Napoleonics... Monsieur un manteau.

Greetings...

Monsieur un manteau...In all his shiny glory.

I have removed the extra greatcoat/ comfy blanky / rouleau de saucisse...

I have of course left the small pigeon/plume ...

Thanks to the previous comment (https://alystoysoldiers.blogspot.com/2021/05/a-new-book-and-little-quiz.html ) by Jolly Broom Man I can only see it as a pigeon 😂..

He has been painted as a  Voltigeur of the 18th Line Infantry.

I think it’s going to be a rather colourful looking unit...

Now all I have to do is remove about twenty extra greatcoats... such fun😁

All the best   Aly

  2. Nice work Aly. I had a unit of these guys in greatcoats circa 1978 - being a teenager myself then, I didnt notice the teenage mistake - maybe its bed roll, not a great coat?! Minifigs were definitely my favourite 25mm range back then, much more so than the likes of Hinchcliffe etc.

    1. Thank you Keith...
The error was corrected when they released the current range... in the late 70s ... I think.
You are clearly a man of taste I too always preferred Minifigs... although I wouldn’t mind painting up a unit of Hinchliffes...

I think he was embarrassed by his fashion faux pas .

  5. Pigeon or not (I think a red-headed parakeet is closer to the mark, personally), he is magnificent.

  6. Brilliant piece, you certainly bring out the best in these figures. As to the JBM damn his eyes like you all I can see is pigeon!
Perhaps modern figures are too well sculpted and detailed and classics such as these were more gamer friendly for painting?

I think JBM has added a new dimension to this miniature 😂
I definitely find these classic toys a lot easier to paint... they are quite forgiving.

  8. Sorry about the pigeon thing everyone...I agree that it does look more like a parakeet now that it’s been painted.

  9. In any case, he is very handsome. I recognized his minifigness right away. I had/have a slew of the 15mm Napoleonics although the younger me really wished for the finances to purchase the 25mm variety, which was a more extensive range and had various interesting one offs if memory serves.

    Best Regards,

I also had a some Minifigs 15mm armies...
One of the things that would have me painting 15mm again would be if I could get hold of the early ‘strip’ figures... they were incredibly charming...
I’ve not seen them come up on eBay very often... which I suspect is a good thing.

  10. I well remember the 15mm Minifigs on strips: they were my "starter drug" back in the day. As far as this fellow, lovely as usual (makes me rethink the whole "shiny vs matte" thing...but that way lies madness). I, too, would probably shave off the rolls on the others--good to see that I'm not the only one with this mania.

The thing I liked about the early 15mm figures was their simplicity and paintability... You could keep things simple or go mad and paint as much detail as possible.
Next time you start a new project... try going gloss on one figure... if you don’t like it it’s no great loss... but if you do you will be hooked 😈
I was never going to leave this chap with two greatcoats 😁.. you are not alone.

    2. I currently cover my figs with a final coat of clear flat lacquer. Before it dries, it is shiny...and in the last year or so, I've found myself more and more drawn to the look of them when shiny, which is new (such appreciations must be a sign of advancing...maturity).

  13. Parakeet aside, that is one lovely figure. How in the world you made a figure in a greatcoat look that appealing I will never know, but voila, there it is. I eagerly await his compatriots!

I chose the 18th Line because their Voltigeur’s had such a colourful parakeet...
And kept the greatcoat a fairly light colour.
The white overalls also help a lot...

  14. Lovely looking shiny fusilier with pigeon! I would have left whatever was strapped to the backpack and called it a blanket if it was me, but it has been noted that I suffer from excessive pragmatism!
