More New Books…

 Greetings….

As I have still not actually finished anything…

Here are a another couple of new books to my library/collection…

Another couple of books I picked up …. Way back …. At Partizan…

They are what they are… excellent books on their subject…

Good information and lovely illustrations…

My ongoing building work has seriously impacted on my painting…

So expect more pictures of  books… never a bad thing in my opinion 😁

All the best   Aly

  2. I'm curious - what era are those illustrations from? I really like the idea of using period illustrations to better understand historical uniforms. Osprey books (and their ilk) are wonderful, but they have a distinctly modern approach to illustration that probably leaves a modern overlay on our imaginations.

    1. Hi Matthew… The first three images are from the 1820’s and the others are from 1808.
The Light infantry book also contains modern illustrations…
I do like to have some references that come from closer to the period… they may not be as photorealistic as some modern examples but when combined with images of actual items of uniform I think you get a good feel for how the uniforms actually looked…

    2. That's so fascinating. I love the poses of the period illustrations: the belly and hips are thrust forward, the waist is high, and the heads are small. I'm sure that in the 1800's, those illustrations looked manly and badass. As they say, the past is a foreign country.

  4. Nice books, one thing they seem to give us is even more variations and minor differences in uniforms of the day 👍

  7. Do these books contain only reproductions of illustrations of the time or also tables of modern drawings? We agree with Matthew Sullivan that nineteenth-century illustrations are an important uniformological source. We only emphasize the aesthetic and propaganda purpose of many of them: in the first three reproduced in your photos, the Napoleonic soldiers are portrayed against a background of war, but their uniforms are in excellent condition, in bright colors and an unrealistic immaculate white. This must be taken into account when painting miniatures, unless you only want to paint soldiers who have just enlisted and received their new uniform!

    1. See my reply to Matthew as to the contents of the books…
You are of course correct these don’t really reflect the truth and conditions of war… there are some period or ne’er period books that do though…
What is nice nowadays is that we have the choice of having our troops dressed for parade or for war…

  9. I always find the illustrations of units done during the period (or close to it) to be of particular interest and value. Very cool book, there.

  11. Nice library additions. One thing I have noticed is often how much larger/bulkier headware is than that sculptors give us on our toys. I wonder why that is?

Maybe people had smaller heads in the past…
