ALY MORRISON'S "BUTTERFLY" ADVENTURES IN THE WORLD OF WARGAMES AND TOY SOLDIERS

15mm Carolingians… Carolingian Heavy Infantry.

Greetings…

My cold/cough has at long last abated and it’s the Easter Bank Holiday in the U.K….

It even looks like the sun might come out…Hurrah!

I have finished another unit of 15mm Carolingians… This time we have some Heavy Infantry.

Like the previous units this was a real pleasure to paint…

The Leather Bits are… Citadel… Deathclaw Brown.

The Tunics and Red bits on the Shields are… Citadel… Mephiston Red.

The Cloaks are… Citadel… Evil Sunz Scarlet.

The Yellow Bits are… Foundry… Ochre 4B.

The Boots are… Citadel… Mournfang Brown.

The Trousers and Leggings are… Foundry… Drab 12B.

The Spears are… Foundry… Spearshaft Light 13C.

As always everything was given a coat of Aly’s Brown Liquid and then highlighted with the original colours.

The figures are from Forged in Battle.

The paints are Wargames Foundry and Citadel...

The bases are as always…

My plans for the weekend are to get on with my rebasing project and get some painting done.

I think that I will also start to post some pictures of some of my butterfly moments that I have decided to give the “green light”…

All the best.  Aly

  1. Another brightly colored unit, above which the yellow and red dragon windsock stands out.... We appreciate the variety in the appearance of these little Carolingians: some bearded, some clean-shaven, some helmeted and others a bare head. In the Carolingian Empire too it was the soldiers themselves who had to provide for their own equipment and armament, right?

    1. Thank you…
As far as I can work out professional warriors seem to have been armed and equipped by their patrons…
I assume that the guards would have been equipped by the Emperors court…
The rest of the troops and local levies would have worn what they could get…
The manufacture of weapons was usually done locally but there were also some centres of production in the Rhineland and Northern Italy…

The colours stand out nicely, which I think is necessary for such little fellows.

Sometimes even I’m surprised by my butterfly… I would never have thought I would be doing 15mm Carolingians.

  7. Very nice Aly. I'm looking forward to seeing your butterfly moments, very apt for spring! Rebasing is also on my agenda, must be that time of year.

I like the idea of rebasing being a seasonal thing…

  8. Very nice work on these Aly...Forged in Battle are hard plastic, aren't they? I think I looked at some if their WWII stuff once upon a time. I am glad you have got over your cough, nothing worse than a tickly cough that hangs around for weeks on end! Like your other fans, I look forward to seeing your "instants papillons" 😝

Forged in Battle are metal miniatures… some of their WW2 vehicles may be resin.
Trying to paint 15mm figures while coughing is not to be recommended 😂.

  9. Dear Aly, they look wonderful! Really impressive. I have always been afraid to try to paint smaller scale miniatures. You are inspiring me to give it a go. Thank you for sharing. Regards Quinn

  11. Aly, wonderful and full of character as always. Do you have a particular rule set you are working with for these? At first I assumed DBA, as your butterfly had led you down that path, but I'm guessing you have some other nefarious scheme in mind for these handsome fellows.

My intention is to use Hail Caesar…
So I will need a fair amount of units… although the basing should allow me to use them for DBA.

  12. Glad you're feeling better and able to post these beauties. It can't be long before we're treated to an army parade?

I will need quite a few more units before I have a parade as I am intending to use Hail Caesar for most of my games.

  13. Aly, another cracking job on these. I think you need to go big battle and do 36 elements. I always think Carolingians have a hint of Middle Earth about them.

  14. Thank you Graham…
As I intend to build a couple of Hail Caesar armies I will have more than enough bases to play big battle DBA.
Yes they are very Knights of Gondor…

Of course I painted them by hand… but I had help because the sculptor had conveniently scribed lines on most of them them 😁

  17. Lovely work again Aly. I hope you managed to get some sun. We certainly had that here over the weekend, despite the forecast of doom by the met service (although parts of the country did have it rather rough).

Glad you are well again and hope you had a good Easter break!

    I am thinking 12 units a side… to begin with😁.
