Shiny Napoleonics… Prussian Artillery.

Greetings…

It’s time for something shiny…

A couple of Prussian Guns…

Now the eagle eyed amongst you will have noticed that these a Hinchliffe fighters and not my go to Minifigs…

For some reason Minifigs Prussian Artillery and Command don’t seem to come up on the likes of eBay that often…

However I found these in a box…  I have a lot of boxes at the moment 😁

Now I’ve never been a great Hinchliffe fan ( Nor a Marmite fan either… Just so’s you know)

Peter Gilder made them look magnificent ( As do my my chums Rob Grace and Robbie Roddis ) but they never really did it for me… I prefer the toy like quality of Minifigs… Especially the Intermediate Range.

But there they were… All Prussian and Artillery like… It would have been rude not to.

I did actually enjoy the challenge of painting these … I even painted a couple of command types which I will post later…

The Tunics are… Citadel… Kantor Blue.

The Red bits are… Citadel… Evil Sunz Scarlet.

The Trousers are… Ak Interactive… English Grey AK11020.

The Gaiters are… Citadel… Corvus Black.

The Greatcoats are… Scale75 War Front…Slate Grey SW-42.

Everything was the given a wash of Aly’s Brown Liquid… Then highlighted with the original colours… some of the lighter colours were given an extra highlight…

The paints are from…

Citadel…

Ak Interactive…

Scale75…

The bases are as always…

More shiny to come…

All the best   Aly

  1. Not a great Hinchliffe fan myself - very long arms, horse bases usually very poor - they're figures I had (have?) quite a few of but they never really worked for me as much as I feel they should have.

    1. My main issue was/is the lack of consistency across the range…
But some of the figures…especially the early ones have a lot of charm.

  2. Despite all their faults these were the figures I aspired to when I first started in the hobby - nostalgia on a stick!

    1. They always looked so good on the Hinchliffe stand at shows…
But I could never quite replicate the look when I got home.

I am however pleased with the way the gunners came out… I will probably paint some more.

I hope I have not rattled the great Hinchliffe - Minifigs debate/schism 🤣

  4. Great work Aly, I'm not much of a fan of the figures themselves either, but once they are nicely painted and shiny as these are, I'm sure they don't stand out too much on the wargames table. Nice work!

I think it’s nice to have some in the collection… I may add a few more as time goes by…

  5. Lovely work on them, I am a Hinchliffe fan I must admit, love the look of them, they can be a bit gangly and some figures better than others but I like them a lot, you have done a super job on them, they look spiffing!!

  6. We don't know the manufacturer, but your paintjob made these batteries very attractive. Unfortunately the linstock gunner has too long a base, so now he seems busy avoiding the worst risks on the battlefield... chasing away the ants? get rid of dog poop? 😂

    1. Thank you…
The gunner with the linstock is actually lighting it from a slow match stuck in the ground behind the gun…
But I think I prefer your dog poo theory 😁

  7. "Let it shine". Whatever the manufacturer I am a fan of the sparkle.
I was more Minifigs then Hinchcliffe. I always found Hinchcliffe would have somewhere on the figure an exqusite bit of sculpting and then elsewhere something would look only half finished and neglected.

  8. Boom! boom! Very shiny! I started with Hinchliffe Napoleonics as a novice but eventually was drawn to Minifigs. Long since sold, I often wonder if they are still doing duty somewhere.

Minifigs were always more consistent… As were Lammings.
I imagine your old battalions are still campaigning… And winning 😁.

  9. Interesting! I always thought the Hinchliffe / Minifigs divide was a bit of a geographical thing with "northern" Hinchliffe being more available " up north" than "southern" Minifigs......What went on over the border in foreign parts was beyond the Pale....☺
Certainty for me, the first "proper" wargames figures I saw were Hinchliffe so they impressed on me. I did have some Garrison (another northern manufacturer) and some Minifigs early Egyptians (bought painted). In Newcastle, the Model Shop briefly stocked miniatures - Hinchliffe; a militaria shop (Corbetts) had second hand painted figures (where the Egyptians came from) and there was rumours of a man with a kiosk near Whitley Bay railway station who sold Minifigs....
When it came to mail order, I always went for Hinchliffe as I'd seen them, there were photos in the likes of Military Modelling and Minifigs were a bit of an unknown. When I did see them, the contrast between gangly Hinchliffe and "no-neck" Minifigs was a shock. I have less prejudices now....☺
The first Minifigs I bought were old 15mm strips from the ToyTub in Edinburgh....

    1. Being from proper up north we were happy with any figures we could get…
My first metal figures were Hinton Hunts bought from a militaria shop just around the corner from the ToyTub…
The next ones were of course Minifigs from the ToyTub… a great shop run by a grumpy man 🤣…
I got my Lammings and Hinchliffe from a hobby shop near Tollcross …
      I can’t remember it’s name now… but it was also run by a grumpy man… 🤣

  10. They are simply magnificent Aly. I love the look of plain bases without any flock etc. clean aesthetic of the toy soldier look is timeless indeed. Quinn

  11. Admit it Aly you really enjoyed painting the crews. I do however think the Mini Fig Garde artillery and horse artillery were always better figures.

  12. Wait a minute - I thought when I opened this - those ain't Minifigs! They do look well though. Hinchliffe had (and have) their own style and there are things I do like about them - especially the cavalry, which can be very dynamic. Not something you can accuse Minifigs of on the whole. At shows in the 70s the Hinchliffe stand was always a showpiece for the Peter Gilder painting technique and a great inspiration. And very shiny too :)

I think they scrubbed up rather well…
I remember the Hinchliffe stand being the busiest stand at a lot of shows… With Peter Guilder giving painting demonstrations.

  13. I think our preferences are linked to our painting styles - mine is more impressionistic (some say messy) which suits Hinchliffes as the detail is often not there. Minifigs are much cleaner sculpts so better suit your precision brushwork - such clean lines it has me grinding my teeth with envy.

  14. Love these Aly, but then again Hinchliffe's were my introduction to wargaming miniatures in metal, and I still have quite a few in service. Nicely done as always!

  15. I recall Hinchliffes. We generally went with Minifigs for Napoleonics "back in the day"-- but given needs and availability in the pre interwebs era, we also were much less averse to mixing lines than nowadays, so we had a bit of everything.

  16. Beautifully done Aly of course. I can see what you mean on the sculpts, like most figures when painted well and in mass formations they are fine but perhaps not first choice.

I think that was the thing about Hinchliffe they look stunning when painted well and in big units… Especially by Mr Guilder.

  19. I have not read the previous comments, so I may just be agreeing with fifteen other readers, but I agree with Paul, I never really liked Hinchcliff miniatures either "back in the day" - half the detail (belts etc) seemed to be scribed one ie just lines, rather than something that actually looked like a belt... Minifigs were certainly quite basic compared with figures of later decades, but they look much nicer to my eye than Hinchcliff ever did!

    1. It’s definitely a ‘marmite’ subject isn’t it…
Minifigs and Lamming both have consistency and the toy soldier look that I am rather fond of…
      Hinchliffe are more freeform…😁
I will still add a few more bits and pieces as it will be nice to represent something from all the ranges that were around in my youth.

      All the best. Aly
