Another Visit to Edinburgh…

Greetings…

I didn’t go to The Other Partizan this year…

Because I went to Edinburgh…

It has been quite a while since I’ve been there…

https://alystoysoldiers.blogspot.com/search/label/Edinburgh%20Castle

This time I went with my friend Chris and his mother Joyce… Chris had invited me to join them and be their guide.

They were both over in the U.K. to attend the annual Games Workshop 10 Years Veterans dinner dance and wanted to visit Auld Reeky,

Joyce had been there many years before and it was Chris’s first visit….

We traveled up by train on the Sunday and ended our journey in a rather splendid hotel… The Scotsman.

Next day we headed out on our adventures… Mostly in and around the Castle.

Yes… That is Scotland… Yes… That is a blue sky.

The weather was fantastic…

Views from the Castle Esplanade…

Since my last visit they have introduced a pre booking system… Which seemed to be designed to create queues…

St Margaret’s Chapel…

 More beautiful views…

Boom… Boom…

This is the Scottish National War Memorial…

This is where the Crown Jewels are kept…

Inside the Great Hall

Exhibits in the museums…

Military rations…

The Prisons of War exhibition….

Out from the museums and into the castle grounds again…
I think the One O’Clock gun is having a snooze…

By the time we had seen all we wanted to see it was late afternoon so we headed down the Royal Mile to the Deacon Brodies Tavern for delicious pies and beer…

Then it was back to the Scotsman…

I was actually quite surprised by how much time we had spent in the castle… Clearly time flies when you are enjoying yourself…

This was a genuine flying visit… Chris and Joyce were heading to London the next day and then back home to the States…And I was heading to Nottingham…It was a fantastic weekend and I am delighted that they invited me along.

Thank you Chris….

All the best.  Aly

  1. Aly,
They do say the sun shines on the righteous.....☺
Partizan was BUSY.......too busy and crowded for old farts like me.
As it was, it ended up as a flying visit.
Haven't been to Edinburgh in years......

  2. Some nice shots Aly, ages since I have been to the castle though. Partizan was fun but you would probably have bought some more soldiers and books 😀

  5. Lovely to see Edinburgh in the sunshine, spectacular place. Years since I was in the Deacon Brodie, good to know it's still going and still good.

  7. When our daughter was studying in Edinburgh, we always took a trip up to the castle to enjoy the views, but never quite as bright and sunny as this. Luckily there was no booking system, so we pretty much paid and walked in, but only had time for a quick whizz round.

    1. I have always popped up to the castle when I am in Edinburgh.
I must admit that the pre-booking was a bit off putting…

  8. I've been to Edinburgh numerous times when attending Carronade or Claymore and always enjoy the city. Highlights have included sharing a bench opposite the castle with Adam Faith waiting for The Gun and meeting Phil Jupitus in the National Gallery.

  9. Wow, wow, wow. Where to start? That hotel is beautiful and I want all those pieces of armour for my games room. I’ve been to Stirling castle but never (for some reason) got to Edinburgh at all. Also I now know that climate change is a «thing » since you have definitely swopped weather with my bit of France. Blue sky! I’ve forgotten what it looks like. lol. I hope your visitors were mightily impressed!

      Yes we stole your weather…😁
Interestingly I have never been to Stirling Castle very often..
Which I should do as my Grandmother was apparently born there…

  10. Aly,
Great Blue Sky , I don't think I have ever seen it portrayed like that! Wonderful shots in and around the castle. My sister in law and her husband were there a few days before your visit. It will be interesting to see if the places enjoyed were similar. Trips with friends. Lots of fun.

  12. You certainly seem to have had a lucky break with the weather Aly, Edinburgh looks fantastic in your pictures! Last time I was back, 2015, we tried to visit the castle but entry was jam packed with others trying to do the same, so we didn't bother in the end....I have been several times previously and my wife and kids could take it or leave it.....so we left it! I have sunk a few pints in Deacon Bridies and also the Ensign Ewart on the Royal Mile.....I think the Deacon was the inspiration behind Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde?

Yes the Deacon Brodies and the Earth are excellent boozers…
And Mr Brodie was indeed the inspiration for Jekyll and Hyde…

The castle always seems to be busy… Which I suppose is a good thing…

      All the best. Aly
