A New Book… Battlefields of the Marne 1914…. An Illustrated History and Guide.

Greetings…

I picked up this rather nice book at the Oxfam Book shop in the town centre today…

Battlefields of the Marne 1914… An Illustrated History and Guide.

It’s one of the Illustrated Michelin Guides to the Battlefields (1914-1918)… Published in 1919.

As you can see it’s lavishly illustrated…And filled with plenty information to help you find your way around the battlefield…
And in pretty good condition considering its age…

All the best.  Aly

  5. That was a great find, great photos and some beautifully reproduced maps / floorplans of a quality that modern publishers should aspire to.

    1. The quality of the maps is exceptional… they are very detailed and are actually printed on a heavier weight of paper.
They are only one sided and are glued onto a tab rather than being bound into the book…
It makes me wonder if they were designed to be removed for ease of use…

  6. Good find. Charity shops have always been a great source for books, etc.

    1. I think we have at least half a dozen charity shops on our little high street… The only thing I haven’t found is toy soldiers 😁

    1. It is indeed…
I already have two WW1 collections that I share with my friend Dave Andrews… We haven’t had them out on the table for quite some time… So maybe something for the New Year.

  9. Now that is a real find, make no mistake about it! Many years ago when I worked in London, I used to walk past the old Michelin office, which I think had become a Conran restaurant by then...

I imagine the Michelin office to be quite a grand affair…

    1. It’s bad enough walking past the shop on a fairly regular basis… But next door… All week… I would be doomed 😱🤣

    1. I have to admit the realising that I had bought a book that was over a hundred years old… For under a tenner… Puta smile on my face…
And on top of that … It’s an excellent book.

  13. These are beaut Aly. Several of them are available as pdfs on the sensational archive.org site. Not the same as an actual book, I understand, but a really economical way to get one's hands on them. Printable, if you want to.

    1. While I was doing a bit of research on the book I did find that there were a couple of sources offering pdf’s…
As useful as these are I have to admit that I much prefer the feel… And smell… of the real thing.
Maybe I need to make a visit to Hay-on-Wye next year…
