Pyrrhus of Epirus…Oscan/Samnite Infantry.

Greetings…

The Butterfly has fluttered on to a little project I started about a year ago…

Pyrrhus of Epirus…

This time we have a unit of Oscan/Samnite Infantry…

This is a very versatile unit, and can be found in most armies of the period and not just those of Pyrrhus.

As Pyrrhus fought Rome, Carthage and Hellenistic Greece I intend to eventually expand to cover all their forces…

The figures are Crusader Miniatures… Available from North Star…

The Tunics are… Warpaints… Dragon Red and Tidal Blue.

                             Citadel… Pallid Wych Flesh.

With contrasting edging…

The Shields are also… Warpaints… Dragon Red and Tidal Blue.

With a Foundry… Buff Leather 7B… Edging.

Everything was given a wash of Aly’s Brown Liquid and then re- highlighted with the original colours.

The paints are Citadel,Warpaints and Foundry…

The Bases are as always Warbases…

I am very pleased with this colourful little unit…There will certainly be more.

I am trying to clear a backlog of started and half finished units so the Butterfly will be getting a lot of exercise 🦋🦋🦋.

All the best.   Aly

  4. What a colourful unit. Nice to see some metal rather than plastic being painted. Top job!

I don’t mind plastic… but metals are my favourite.

  7. Lovely. Wonder what the feathers were from? Ostrich?

I don’t think the feathers were Ostrich… I read somewhere that they were not always feathers… they were sometimes painted material, leather or even thin metal sheet…
There certainly must have been a lot of bald birds in the ancient world…

  8. Superb job, young sir, as I would expect. Confess I am a total ignopotomus on this period - we know that Pyrrhic victories were not so good, but how bad was a Pyrrhic defeat?

It is a fascinating period filled with interesting and entertaining psychopaths… 😁
If you want to see a Pyrrhic Defeat just read one of my battle reports 🙀🤣🤣…

  9. Lovely Aly! My own butterfly is flapping - must be the time of year. Absence of comments is due to not being able to sign in on tablet - so limited on some blogs to laptop at weekends.

  13. Alas, I used to have an army of painted early Romans with Etruscans and Samnites. That was a fine looking army, though not as fine as yours. Unfortunately they fell victim to the desire to raise cash for the Tennant collection. https://miniatureminions.blogspot.com/2011/12/more-romans-arrive.html

The Tennant collection was a chance in a lifetime and well worth it…
