No... Not the new novel by E.L.James...
Just a little update on how my latest cavalry units are proceeding...
This photo and the lighting doesn't really do justice to the subtle mix of grey shades and dapples on these horses... but its there ... honest...
Hopefully I will get some reds done this evening...
All the best. Aly.
Grey horses are a pain to paint but look good on the table .
ReplyDeleteI certainly agree with you Tony...

Thank you Iain...
DeleteYes grey primer... I thought I would give myself a head start...
Actually I have started using grey primer a lot these days.

Wow, what fantastic sculpts. I can see the dapples clear enough. Tough colour to paint though I'd imagine.
ReplyDeleteThey are Front Rank... always a joy to paint.
DeleteIt’s the dapples that are tricky... you want to avoid to much of a rocking horse look.
All the best. Aly
A promising start: I can see the dappling (and I've seen the finished version in your other figures). Very impressive: were I to try that, I'd wind up with a polka-dotted horse (which would be fine for panto, but hardly for horse guards!)
ReplyDeleteThank you Ed
DeleteLooking at pictures of grey horses... some of them really look like the have just got polka dots painted on them...
All the best. Aly
Great stuff Aly. I always start grey horses with some trepidation, but am always pleased with the final result, although like Ed all my attempts at dappling seem to end up like pantomime horses - I only ever managed to achieve the effect once...many years ago when my eyes were better, my hand steadier and patience greater.
ReplyDeleteI see some very tiny little men lurking in the background of that photo.
Thank you Mark...
DeleteI dilute the paint that I use for the dapple in an attempt to get less of a sharp edge... if things still look a bit harsh I will ‘glaze’ the whole model with a diluted version of the base coat....
Yes some of the 6mm Dave Andrews and I bought... I am try out how to paint the little buggers... I am not rushing into this... ;-)
All the best. Aly
They look very nice Aly - the forerunners of the Royal North British Dragoons...?
ReplyDeleteThank you Keith...
DeleteThere are two units on the go... The 2nd Dragoons (The Greys) and the Grey Musketeers...

A fantastic period and a promising group Aly!
