Hammerhead... 2019

This weekend Dave Andrews and I popped over to Hammerhead in Newark...

https://www.hammerheadshow.co.uk/

I must say this is an excellent show... the whole premise is that all of the games are participation games... participation games may not be your thing... but it certainly keeps people in the building... And it is definitely popular...
The show was indeed busy.

There were a lot of lovely games... due to various distractions I didn't take that many pictures... but here they are...

Paperboys ... from Peter Dennis.

A witch racing game... a lovely building.

No idea what so ever... but delightfully weird...

Wytch King or Parliament... by the Bunker Boys... lots of madness on every inch of the table...

A lovely Pulp Adventure game... What I find hard to believe is that this is a gaming mat...

Albedo Combat Patrol... based on the comic Albedo Anthropomorphics...

Definitely not everyone's taste... but very nicely done...

A nice WW2 game...

Star Wars...

Wellington in India... Very nice...

A Very British Civil War...

Did I buy anything?
Of course I did...

Some lovely buildings by EWM...
I like these ... they are a nice size and I think they will fit well with my Hudson and Allen buildings.
If you went to Pauls stand I hope you got a handful of his ginger nuts...

Okay...
I want you to brace yourself now...

Maybe Dave and I were tired ...
Maybe we were possessed by daemons...
Maybe we  went out off our minds...
Maybe we were hypnotized into buying the first thing we saw..

6mm Napoleonics...
Yes...
No you are not seeing things...
6mm Napoleonics...
The scale of the Devil...

And...

Hex terrain...

Okay...
Dave and I have both got a set of Command and Colors... we have talked about finding a way of using miniatures instead of blocks and what scale could we use...
And while we were looking at Baccus Miniatures Napoleonics we thought ... lets do it...

It was just a short jump to Kallistra...

I think my butterfly is asserting itself...

This one wont be happening overnight... I am still trying to work out how to paint the little buggers let alone do the terrain... I also want to finish my WSS.

All the best   Aly

  1. Playing Commands & Colors with 6mm figures is a splendid idea! A similar path led me to Commands & Colors Ancients with Baccus 6mm armies. No regrets from me!

    1. How did you base yours...
I am only thinking of using the 6mil for Command and Colors..
So I am going for 4 'stands' to a battalion... but I am still not sure about the size...

      All the best Aly

  2. Repent and turn back to the one true scale! 😉

  3. I really like the idea of adding miniatures to Command and Colors...
But these 6 mil miniatures seem so far away... and my brushes are enormous...
    All the best Aly

  4. Lovely report: thanks. All participation games? Sounds like a US convention: interesting to see the various takes on that among the reports. 6mm? Welcome to "Gawd's Own Scale!" LOL

    1. Thanks Ed...
I like the increase in participation games in general at U.K. shows... as I have said it keeps people there... which can only be a good thing.
Demo games also have their place and I will continue to put them on...
6mm... I fear ‘tis the path of madness... ;-)

      All the best. Aly

  5. OK Aly, I thought the first 'defiantly' was perhaps a joke or pun, but two of them - I think this is "definitely" a mistake! We have played a few games of Command and Colours using good ol'28mm - but I suspect you are correct and smaller scale figures on bases that actually fit the hex shaped playing surface will work a lot better! Have you considered basing units on hex shaped bases that align with the size of the playing surface - that's what our friend Mr Strachan suggested would be most logical - not that any of us did it of course!

I am not going to rush into the 6mm thing... there will be some pondering to do.
Hexes on hexes... that sound like witchcraft to me.

  6. Nice set of photos, were you in a tank when you took the VBCW one? You have discovered the joy of six then, I think I will remain celibate.

    1. Thanks Phil...
Once I had cropped all of the visitors out of the picture this was all I had...
A lot of the games were very busy.
If you stand at the other end of the room when you are gaming you will get a good idea of what your 6mm collection will look like... ;-)

  7. Yeah, once you try 6 Aly you'll never go back! There's nothing beats the joy of a triple zero brush with only two hairs and a magnifying glass / light array the size of Jodrell Bank. Found myself painting a moustache on one of my buggers the other day! Like anyone's ever going to se that!

Yeh!... we will see how I get on with that... I know what I am like...

  8. Looks like a good show and it's always a good time to start a new period/scale and hexes? Maybe you were just low on caffeine? I am incapable of painting anything smaller than 28mm so the best of luck to you, especially Napoleonics!

    1. It was a very good show...
I’m going with possession... by tiny little demons...

  9. 6mm! That's a great scale for Ancients where you can mash everything with brown – but those Napoleonic with precisely placed bright uniform colours ... shiver. I challenge you to paint all the facings on them!

  10. All good and a great way to do C&C games and more once you get into your stride on this. There is a chap who blogs some Kallistra and 6mm C&C games, so you might get some good ideas from him. I have put a recent link below, but if you go back (about 18 months from memory) into his blog, he did all the Waterloo, Quatre Bras stuff etc.

    LINK
    http://keithswargames.blogspot.com/2019/02/battle-of-somosierra-in-6mm.html

The 6mm does help any hills used to look like hills in terms of depth and scale, likewise rivers look like significant waterways and both terrain and figure can be made to sit nicely within the 4" hex.

There is another bloke who does old 25mm on 7.5" hexes, though that, while looking impressive, needs a big space. LINK below

I hope you enjoy this project.

The 6min stuff is new to me... now a follower...;-)
I already follow Tony at Prometheus in aspic... beautiful toys... I think his table is bigger than my house...

I really like EWM toys... Paul would love to get me started on a WW2 project...
Now that would be the path to insanity... 6 mm is just madness ;-)
