Lion Rampant... Sassanid Light Cavalry.

Here is my latest unit for my Lion Rampant 3rd Century Rome project...


Sassanid Light Horse with Javelins (and Bows)...





The horses were painted using a couple of coats of Citadel Contrast Colours Gore-Grunta Fur

over... Army Painter Brown Fur 


The tunics are... Citadel... Pallid Wytch Flesh.
The Trousers are... Citadel... Lothern Blue.
The Leather work is a mixture of... Citadel... Skrag Brown and Doombull Brown.


Everything(except the horses ) was given a coat of Aly's Brown Liquid and highlighted with their original colours...
Once matte varnished the metal parts were glossed and the leather was given a coat of Tamiya Clear Orange...


I have an idea for the basing... so hopefully that will get done soon.

    I have been trying to simplify my style over the years... I make the effort where and when it is necessary and use varnish and flat colour to create contrasts ... which adds interest.

    I have to try playing Lion Rampant at the 1st Crusade setting with my Saracen army.
    My idea for basing was to put infantry on 25mm and cavalry on 40mm round bases. This way I use them for Saga and Hail Caesar. For HC I use old War of The Ring trays. For infantry 1 tray for small unit, and two for standard unit. For cavalry 2 trays for light cavalry small units and 4 for medium/heavy. Very versatile way of basing I think that gives lots of possibilities for different game systems.

      I have to admit that I am not a fan of movement trays but the War of the Ring ones are quite nice...

    (ps I'm glad you mentioned that transfers were used on the shields! I was thinking back to painting late Greek hoplite shields in the 80's

      It’s the basing style that is used in the Pikeman's Lament and Rebels and Patriots rules... I think it will work well.

      Contrast pants are a godsend for painting horses...
      Two washes over a brown spray undercoat in some cases you only need one...
