Greetings...
Still not getting enough painting in at the moment...
I have cleaned up some Sassanid light cavalry and they are ready to be sprayed a nice shade of brown so I can start work on the horses...
Unfortunately some idiot forgot to buy some suitable brown spray... Ha! well...
Fortunately I have some images of the last two units that I have painted up as test pieces for my Shiny Napoleonics project...
First up the Neapolitan 8th Infantry Regiment...
These are later Lamming Miniatures with Minifigs Command...
I also added short swards and pompoms to the flank companies...
I have to admit that originally I wasn't to pleased with these... I felt that the painting style didn't fit with what I had already done... I have however grown to like them...
Next up the Prussian 1st Guards regiment.
Now I am really pleased with these... They are pretty much what I want from this collection...
They are a mixture of S Range and Intermediate Range Minifigs... and were a joy to paint.
Okay... Not everyone's taste... But they make me smile... and that is in the end all that matters.
The bases are from Warbases...

And the Standards are from GMB Designs...

All the best Aly...
They make me smile too. For all the right reasons!

They all look right smart to me. The Prussian Guards with their large plumes are especially handsome. Nice!
ReplyDeleteThank you Jonathan...
DeleteNothing says Guards like a big hat....;-)
All the best. Aly
Nicely done Aly, I would have recognised those 'plumes' from miles away and it brings back many fond memories of my early minifig army đȘ
ReplyDeleteThe Neapolitan's look good - the Lamming range I think is much forgotten
Thank you Graham.
DeleteMost of my toy soldiers were Minifigs or Lammings... it’s nice to revisit them.
All the best. Aly
Great work Aly...I have to admit to being one of those who has never appreciated the attraction of high gloss paintwork...but if they make you happy, all power to you! I will say, Minifigs were always my favourite range back in the day...circa 1976-1980....
ReplyDeleteThank you Keith...
DeleteI think Minifigs really suit the shiny look... I can’t imagine painting Front Rank figures in the same way...
All the best. Aly
"They make me smile" - in the end we do this hobby to please ourselves not others. They make me smile as well.
ReplyDeleteI am glad they make you smile Paul...
DeleteI am slowly grinning my way through some French Imperial Guard Dutch Grenadiers...
All the best. Aly
Very well done on both units Aly! Not exactly the look I'd be aiming for, but then I'm not particularly drawn to Napoleonics either. That said I can somehow understand the attraction of this style. Suits the figures very well.
ReplyDeleteThank you Nick...
DeleteI can’t imagine the figures being painted in any other way.
All the best. Aly
Well done, love the gorgeous and impressive 1st Guards regiment...
ReplyDeleteThank you Phil...
DeleteThe guards do stand out rather well...
All the best. Aly
Lovely looking shiny Napoleonic types, delightful!

DeleteAll the best. Aly
Most of us ;-)
DeleteLike the Neapolitans , always had a soft spot for them in wargaming .
ReplyDeleteI suspect I will paint more Neapolitans...
DeleteThey have some splendid uniforms... even by Napoleonic standards...
All the best. Aly
As you say, not to everyone's taste, and certainly not to mine. But, if you are happy what business is it of anyone else?
ReplyDeleteAnd I am indeed happy...
DeleteAll the best. Aly
I love them as they are, wish I had a few.
ReplyDeleteVery smart presentation.
Thank you Jim...

The big white busch plumes of the Prussian Guard, always a crowd pleaser. Charming rendition, these shiny Nappies: worthy of a confection box...
ReplyDeleteThank you Ed...
DeleteThey certainly have the Chocolate Box style...
All the best. Aly
I think the style actually suits Minifigs really well but in any case you've nailed it! (esp the Guards) Got me smiling with pleasure at the mere sight of them.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much Ross...
DeleteAll the best. Aly
Two cracking additions to your collection. I have both regiments, albeit later models but still shiny nonetheless!
ReplyDeleteHappy gaming, best wishes,
Jeremy
Thank you Jeremy...

You have the toy soldier style perfectly there - love the gloss varnish - like porcelain!
ReplyDeleteThank you Rick...
DeleteGood old Wilkos yacht varnish...
All the best. Aly
These are absolutely fabulous, Aly! I'm particularly impressed by the Lammings, but the Minifigs are great as well. Simply gorgeous, and really inspiring.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good work!

Thank you Matt...
DeleteComing from you... one of the people who inspired me to start this project... it is praise indeed.

A splendid and superb shine, Sir.

Beautiful! And the bases just set them off perfectly.
ReplyDeleteThank you Nate...
DeleteIt took a few tries for me to get the look and colour I was looking for on the bases...
I am very pleased how they came out...
All the best. Aly
Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThank you Kym...
DeleteAll the best Aly
Do you have painting tips somewhere on your blog (for getting this look?). I love your figures.
ReplyDeleteI haven’t posted any painting tips for shiny toys... maybe it’s something I should think of doing
DeleteThe method I use is pretty much the same as my normal technique...
I block in the colours then give everything a wash... of Aly’s Brown Liquid... the recipe is in the Pages section of the blog...
I then re highlight everything with the original colour... lighter colours will often get an additional highlight...
I tend to dilute the paint I use for highlights with Citadel Lahmian Medium and build the colour with a couple of coats...I find that you get a nice smooth transition... which looks good when varnished...
As a rule I put more highlights on light colours... dark colours are left dark... I sometimes put an additional ink wash on to give extra depth to the colour ...
Black is never highlighted...
I hope that helps a bit...
All the best. Aly
