Yet more family history… Colour Sergeant Thomas Wardrope 1865-1938.

Greetings…

Since my last post I have managed to get hold of a scan of my Great Grandfather’s obituary…

I have edited the contrast on it to make it a bit more readable…

The comment about him regretting not being able to serve during WW1 always makes me smile… According to my Mother … He was livid!

Colour Sergeant Thomas Wardrope…

Thomas’s Obituary…

All the best.  Aly

    1. Yes indeed…
They were a tough lot….And mostly long lived.
It was probably safer in the army than it was down a mine or working in the Carron Iron works…

One of my Grandfathers worked for Carron and my Grandmother was a draftswoman there…
They had of course stopped making Carronades by that time 😁

  2. Splendid, you must be most chuffed to get hold of that.

    1. I certainly am Phil…
I only ever got snippets of information from my mother and grandmother… It’s nice to see the fuller picture.

I really need to turn my attention to my fathers side of the family…Who knows what I might find… Some scandals would be fun 😁.

I was surprised at how strong a connection there was to the military….
      It’s always worth a look.

  7. Interesting find, the more my family look into my grandfather's history, a more or less contemporary of your great grandfather the more cantankerous, duplicitous and probably at least bigamous he appears, at least he seems better than my great grandfather on the other side who looks like he was probably a murderer! Great stock me!

It’s these colourful characters that make our past interesting 😁

  8. How wonderful to find an actual printed account of his life. I have a few oral stories that have been passed down, but never know how much stock to put in them. Most of my family has not served in the military to my knowledge, but a direct ancestor on my mothers side was apparently well placed and served in South Carolina during that nasty little insurrection we had in the 1770s...

    1. It is indeed a splendid record of my Great Grandfathers life David…
You should find out more about your insurrectionists activities in the 1770’s.
