3rd Century Rome… Roman armoured camel riders.

Greetings…

Although the lurgy is still with me I am slowly starting to feel the painting mojo flowing through my aching bones…

I have managed at long last to finish this unit for my 3rd Century Romans…

Those of you with long memories will be aware that I actually dug these out of the Lead Alp to paint in April 😱.

I have been slowly picking away at them and here they are…

I must admit that I did find them a bit of a task…But they have turned out rather well.

The Camel is… Foundry… Canvas Shade 8A.
The Camel ‘Fur’ is… Foundry… Drab 12A.
The various ‘Leathers’ are… Citadel… Doombull Brown… Skrag Brown… Tuskor Fur and…Death Claw Brown.
The Red Bits are… Citadel… Evil Sunz Scarlet.
The White Bits are… Citadel… Pallid Wych Flesh.
The Cloaks are… Foundry… Royal Purple Shade 19A.
The Shields are… Citadel… Teclis Blue… With AK11118… Ochre Rims.

Everything was given a wash with Aly’s Brown Liquid and highlighting with the original shades... the white was given an extra highlight with added pure white...

The miniatures are...
A&A...  https://www.aandaminiatures.co.uk/

The bases are...

I am glad that I have now got these chaps finished…It’s going to be interesting to see how they do up against Nellie.

All the best.  Aly

  1. Glad to hear you're feeling a bit better - have to stick with the single malt eh? But lurgy or not that is one stunning unit.

Mr Tamnavulin’s patent pick me up seems to be working quite well.

  6. Really lovely paint work Aly I think I would have been tempted to put the camels on individual bases to show them of a bit more. Good news on the improving health 👍

They are based to fit in with the rest of the collection…Also as the legs on the camels are a bit on the thin side so having them tightly grouped should protect them from bending.

  7. Nice Dromedarii. Always fancied a unit of them or their French Napoleonic brethren. Hope you're back to full health soon.

  10. Hope you feel better Aly. The Roman Camel riders are such an obscure and unusual unit but they are a marvel to look at, what a great job. Thank you and best wishes - Quinn

  12. Wonderful unit Aly. Let's hope they prove as irresistible on the table-top as they must have when when contemplating their purchase. I have no camels of any sort myself but must think of a way I can have them for any of my armies.

I believe the Romans first started using Dromedarii in Syria around the time of Trajan but I don’t know whether they were armoured or not…

The Sassanids and Palmyrans also used armoured camels….Theirs were full on Cataphracts….I may need to get some of these as well 😁

  14. Oooo they are very nice Aly! You have used a great mix of colours and I swear that the camel ridden by the standard bearer is the one I rode in Egypt in 2009.
