It’s been a totally non-hobby week so far… A slight clammy feeling on Saturday has turned into the current office lurgy…aches, sweats, snot and coughs… Lovely 🤒.
I always know when I am properly poorly… The painting mojo takes a running jump….
I have been listening to a few Podcasts…
Here are three of the Historical ones that have been binged
The British History Podcast… By Jamie Jeffers.
Well researched history presented in a light and entertaining style…with some very amusing musical themes thrown in.
https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-napoleonic-wars-podcast-aka-the-napoleonicist/id1503208643
The Napoleonic Wars Podcast… By Zack White.
More well researched history also presented in a light, entertaining and occasionally rambling style…I don’t consider the rambling to be a negative…It mostly comes from Zack White’s use of guests… many of whom are long term acquaintances or friends.
There is also a YouTube channel for those who like some visuals.
The Age of Napoleon… By Everett Rummage.
Yet more well researched and presented history… Everett Rummage has a more traditional linear presentation style with plenty period quotes which I find very listenable.
Okay I’m not an expert or historian so when I say well researched I am only basing this on my own limited knowledge.
When my eyes and nose take a rest from streaming I have been getting a little bit of reading in…
So far I have read up to the middle of the chapter on the Chronology of the War of the First Coalition which I am finding very interesting.
Waterloo… The Other Battles… By S Henry Dwan… From the Orders of Battle Series.
A bit of an unconventional layout but the lists themselves look quite detailed…. The way the units are depicted certainly has a wargames friendly feel to them.
Okay… My cough is telling me to go and make a cup of tea…
Hopefully toys next time…
All the best. Aly
Get well, Aly! When you are too sick to paint, well, you are too sick!
ReplyDeleteThank you Jonathan…
DeleteVery true…
All the best. Aly
Tea? It's a toddy you need.....trouble is I can't remember the best one....it's got Glen something in it.....Glenlivet, Glenmorangie, Glenkinchie...keep trying til you find the right one. Cold and flu will have vanished by that point so you know it's worked! Side affects....listening to podcasts with volume turned way down the following day.
ReplyDeleteTake care and get well soon.
Thank you Stuart…
DeleteI have a very fine Auchentoshan … Which for comedy affect sounds like a sneeze…
It may take a few tries to get the dose right…
All the best. Aly
Hope the lurgi has abated by now! Books by Helion, did you win the Lottery then?
ReplyDeleteIt’s quite tenacious this one… but I do detect some improvement.
DeleteApart from toy soldiers, books the odd nice whisky I live a relatively frugal life 😁
All the best. Aly
Stuart is right up to a point, but for me it's Talisker. Do take care and get well soon.
ReplyDeleteThank you Rob
DeleteI think it’s probably best to try a number of complimentary cures…
All the best. Aly
Hope you get well soon Aly……..some interesting links thanks for those 👍
ReplyDeleteThank you Matt.
DeleteI am quite a fan of podcasts… i like to listen to them while I paint.
All the best. Aly
Whiskey, lemon and honey in copious amounts Aly, followed by a lie down. Hang on a minute what a cracking idea. Get well soon.
ReplyDeleteThank you Robbie…
DeleteAdd a little bit of ginger and I think that counts as a hipster health drink… possibly one of your five a day 🤣
All the best. Aly
Couple of pints of night nurse should sort you out, even if it’s the ruddy Covid. Might have a bit myself come to think of it. Just to be on the safe side, like.
ReplyDeleteNight Nurse… You are so old school 😂
DeleteCan you get that in France?
All the best. Aly
Aly,
ReplyDeleteHopefully the local version of your choice of toddy helped. Single malts may not cure, but certainly alleviate symptoms. Thank you for the reviews.
Joe
Thank you Joe…
DeleteIn truth I think a good single malt is a medicine that should really be taken when you are in full health 🤣.
All the best. Aly
My you are in the wars at the moment. Drink up and KBO old chap.
ReplyDeleteThank you Phil…
DeleteI suppose it’s one of the risks of working in a busy office.🙄
All the best. Aly
Lots of bad stuff circulating at this time of year (here in our neck of the woods in the US as well). Hope you're up and painting soon. In the meantime, thanks for the lead on the Dwan book: a new one on me!
ReplyDeleteThank you Ed…
DeleteAs I said the Dwan book has an unconventional layout but the information looks good.
All the best. Aly
Get well soon. Prefer brandy, lemon and honey myself. Actually a large spoonful of honey by itself is quite useful, though better for coughs.
ReplyDeleteThank you Rob…
DeleteMy non-alcoholic go to is peppermint tea with a spoonful of honey…
I feel the brand works better ‘au naturale ‘….
All the best. Aly
Hope you feel better soon. Lots of it going round it seems, but famous last words, we've avoided it so far, apart from feeling a bit off colour of late.
ReplyDeleteThank you Steve…
DeleteIt’s that time of year again…
All the best. Aly
Thats serious sickness if you can't be bothered painting Aly, hope you get well again soon - I like the sound of Stuarts remedy though - tell us how that works out for you!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Keith…
DeleteIt looks like the traditional remedies are the way to go…😁
All the best. Aly
I agree with Stuart and Keith...tea will not help...the only remedy for the Dreaded Lurgy is a dram or two or three.
ReplyDeleteMaybe tea is better for breakfast 😂…
DeleteAll this talk of alcoholic medication has reminded me that there used to be a pub called ‘The Doctors’ in Edinburgh…😁
All the best. Aly
Hope you are feeling better by now Aly and the dram or two or three has had the desired effect. As long as the Lurgy is not sooo bad that you can't paint and read, I might be willing to make the trade. Work just gets in the way of hobby time! Mind you I had COVID for the first time 2 months ago, and that is definitely not worth the free time!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you David…
DeleteI am improving steadily… but I am still knackered… Everyone I know who has had this says it takes about three weeks to get over it…
I am impressed that you avoided Covid for so long…
The painting mojo is slowly returning.
All the best. Aly
Thanks for buying Throwing Thunderbolts, I hope you enjoy it. All the best Garry
ReplyDeleteThank you Gary…
DeleteI am thoroughly enjoying it… I hadn’t realised how many battles/actions there were between 1792 and 1797.
All the best. Aly
Lots of interesting stuff there, I hope you've been following Stuart's advice although I can't even look at Talisker without getting a hangover, Jamesons 12year old, now you're talking!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
The good thing about these‘Traditional’ remedies is that if one doesn’t work for you there are plenty more alternatives to try 😁.
DeleteAll the best. Aly
Take care Aly. And beware. throwing Thunderbolts has got me thinking how easy it would be to put forces together for Lincelles...
ReplyDeleteFear not Nate…
DeleteI have definitely not been looking at ranges from Eureka, Emperor Toad, Foundry, Trent or even Victorious Miniatures… Honest 😁
All the best. Aly
