FromMy Side of the Table… Somewhere in Spain

Greetings…

Last week I went over to Alan Perry’s house for a game of toy soldiers…

Alan was play testing Jervis Johnson’s forthcoming Valour and Fortitude rules…

Alan and Steve played the French and their Allies while David,Michael and myself played the Anglo-Portuguese and Spanish.

Because of work commitments I arrived later than the others and came on the table as reinforcements.

Here are some images pre-reinforcements…

The reinforcements arrive…

Just look at that lovely Spanish cavalry…Led by the dashing Brigadier Desafortunada…
They are just begging to charge something… Hurrah!

The rest of the battle…

A bit of Light Cavalry action… Which I of course lost…. Gloriously.

Desafortunada… Cavalry…. A Grand Battery… Hmmmmm!
Yes of course he went for it…Encouraged by everyone….  Even my own side.

In the end the didn’t get as far as the guns because we won the day… Hurrah! (I’m not sure how much of a contribution that I actually made to the victory but I am still going to take the win).

A splendid game in splendid company which managed to use most of the table throughout the battle… Many thanks to Alan.

You can find a bit more on the game here…

All the best.  Aly.

Another Blog Birthday.

Greetings…

Hurrah! Another Blog Birthday… And of course it wouldn’t be a celebration without Drinky.

It’s certainly been another interesting year…
Last year at this time I was still working from home full time and continuing to shield myself from most of the outside world… Then I caught Covid and had my fourth jab and now I have started going into the office again, I have been out and about, wargaming and even going to shows… Things have changed and hopefully they will continue to do so…
I managed to get a fair few toys painted…Although this has slowed down a bit lately… Due to work, life and a desire to sit with a beer in the sun.

Has my butterfly taken me to any interesting new adventures… Of course it has… They will be revealed in due course when I have something to show off.

The highlight of the last year was of course having Mharaid stay over at Xmas and prove that my dice throwing is still as atrocious as ever…

Here’s to the next year and more wargames, shows and toys…

All the best.  Aly

More New Books…

 Greetings….

As I have still not actually finished anything…

Here are a another couple of new books to my library/collection…

Another couple of books I picked up …. Way back …. At Partizan…

They are what they are… excellent books on their subject…

Good information and lovely illustrations…

My ongoing building work has seriously impacted on my painting…

So expect more pictures of  books… never a bad thing in my opinion 😁

New books and something shiny…

Greetings…

Life, work and the world seem to be trying to stop me painting toys so I thought I would start posting about my recent book purchases….

These are a couple of lovely books by Andre Jouineau and Jean-Marie Mongin…

L’ Infanterie de Ligne 1776-1810 and 1814-1845…

I am really impressed with these books… the level of detail is splendid… Okay probably more than is necessary to paint toy soldiers… but fascinating nonetheless.
I would highly recommend them…
And now for something shiny…

This is a nice little Hinchliffe Napoleonic French Officer…
A classic look and a joy to paint…

The pictures were taken with my new Phone Camera … which I am still getting used to… the focal depth is different from my old one but the colour quality is loads better…
Hopefully I will get a bit more practice when I get the chance to paint more toys…

All the best.  Aly.

The Wild Geese Wargamers weekend 2022.

Greetings…

Just over a week ago I had the pleasure of returning to Kenilworth in Warwickshire and joining a fine group of fellows for a weekend of mainly 18th century warfare, fine food and a moderate amount/lashings of booze.

Our last get together was in 2019…Which now seems like a whole world ago.

The games on offer this year were…

The Battle of Prague with Prince August home cast figures from Steve Metheringham…

Hougoumont from Tony Dillon…

Mollwitz using plastic Spencer Smith Miniatures from Willz Harley…

The Battle of Reichenberg from Gary Philips…

Wellington in India from Martin Gane…

I played in three games over the weekend and even managed to be on the winning side in one…

Here are some images of my adventures… suitably randomised by Blogger.

My first game…Prague.

I took command of the cavalry…and after many glorious charges and counter charges… I came second.

Next up…Mollwitz

I took command of the Infantry this time…
And after many volleys and counter volleys… yup!…. That will be another second place…

And last but by no means least…Wellington in India.

I had command of the left flank…
And after volleys, counter volleys, charges, counter charges and even rocket fire… I was quite by surprise on the winning side… Hurrah!

I also won a well deserved trophy… 😁.

A truly splendid weekend in the company of splendid fellows…
A big thank you to everyone who made this happen…

I am already looking forward to next year…

I would also like to take the opportunity to mention the charity Blesma which was set up after WW1 to support Limbless Veterans…
These fine people were also having an AGM/Conference at the same Hotel and a number of the attendees popped in to look at our endeavours…

All the best.   Aly
