ALY MORRISON'S "BUTTERFLY" ADVENTURES IN THE WORLD OF WARGAMES AND TOY SOLDIERS

Shiny Napoleonics… British Command.

 Greetings…

It’s time for something a bit shiny…

A little while back I received a little gift of some Lamming British Command figures from my chum David over at the Miniature Minions Blog…

http://miniatureminions.blogspot.com/

If you are interested in the world of shiny I would certainly have a visit…

Here are the toys…

Classic Lammings with a basic gloss paint job…

I decided it was about time I got at least one of them painted…

This chap was a real pleasure to paint… a simple but bright colour scheme…

And of course a decent coat of varnish…

The Tunic is…Citadel… Evil Sunz Scarlet.

The Facings are… Citadel… Kantor Blue.

The Breeches are… Citadel… Pallid Wych Flesh.

My wargames room clear out/up is continuing at a slow but steady pace…But I have managed to find a new place for my Photo Booth… so if nothing else I will be able to take some pictures of toys.

All the best.  Aly

  1. Thanks for the shameless plug for my site Aly. I can't imagine these being in better hands. Beautifully done, despite the awful paint color names, Pallid Wych Flesh indeed!

    1. Thank you David…
      It was a pleasure…
I’m not sure.. Pallid Wych Flesh or Pinky Greyish Off White…
It’s the colour I use for all my white cloth… I think it looks more natural than a pure white… I keep that for leather.

      All the best. Aly

  5. It looks very dandy indeed. Please tell me you use humbrol 80 green on the figure base or is that also a GW paint.

  16. Nicely done as always - those Lamming models have a 'toy soldier'style of their own - what varnish are you using there? I ask because I'm using the Wilko acrylic varnish and fret that it's... not quite shiny enough!

    1. Hi Rick…
A toy soldier style would be good description…

I am using..Wilko Yacht Varnish… one good coat.
It comes in 250ml tins which is also very convenient.

      All the best. Aly

  17. Fab general Aly - finely dressed [idiot] son of the aristocracy, inspirational leader. Lovely, lovely paint job, as ever.

Didn't Lamming carve his masters from brass? - that's some feat in itself. I am very fond of Lammings, but am scared away by the gradual scale creep. I sent a question to an eBay seller once - I asked him, "sorry to bother you - what size are your 25mm Lammings?", and he replied "25mm". Which served me right.

    1. Thank you Tony…
I am sure he will blunder about the battlefield with style…
I believe Bill originally mad his masters in wax and then had them cast in brass, which he then reworked and finished with engraving tools…I have done this kind of thing and it’s certainly not easy…
I think he may have gone over to having them cast in tin… but I am not sure.
I believe the official size for 25mm figures is now 32mm…😳

      All the best. Aly

    2. Rightly or wrongly Bill told me that he carved his masters in brass - didn't mention wax.

    3. That’s interesting Rob…
When I talked to Bill about making masters… a long time ago … when I first started sculpting miniatures…
We talked about the different materials and he said he worked up his brass masters… which I have always assumed he meant ‘finishing off’… mainly because this is what my father would say and he made masters/originals in wax and then finished them off once they were cast.
Also I had already used the lost wax casting process to make my first masters… and they do indeed need to be worked on to get them perfect.
If the masters were brass they may well still exist… I would love to see them.
      All the best. Aly
