Greetings…
A new book arrived today… which makes it either a very late Christmas or a New Years present to my self….
Napoleon’s Wars, Wargames Rules 1792-1815 by Terry Mahon.
This isn’t a rule set or a writer I’ve come across before, but as I want to try out a few different rule sets when I get enough Shiny Napoleonics painted up, I thought that I would pick up a copy.
The rules don’t use dice… they are driven by a card (normal playing cards) based system, something I have not used before… This and that they can also be used for solo play has intrigued me.
If anyone has used them… I would certainly appreciate your opinions.
Hopefully I will get a chance to try them out sooner rather than later… I still need to paint some French and Allied/Prussian command and Allied/PrussianArtillery… but an all infantry action may be an option.
All the best. Aly
As it's the pantomime season, "New rules for old!" seems appropriate.
ReplyDeleteVery good David 😁…
DeleteI suppose I should say “Oh! No their not”… but I won’t…
Oh! Dear…
All the best. Aly
I’ve played a number of wargames using standard “poker” cards instead of dice but they were usually skirmish ones (games not cards). It would be interesting to see how it works in a bigger games.
ReplyDeleteIt will also be interesting to hear how the solo game looks like. I have never played such game, but maybe I should try. Especially as the pandemic doesn’t want to give up ;-)
Enjoy your New Year’s Eve Aly!
Best wishes,
Jan
I’ve used cards to determine activation before, especially when having a solo game…
DeleteBut I’ve not used it as the game engine…
I tend to use solo games to try out new rules systems or scenario ideas… they can be a lot of fun.
All the best and a happy New Year. Aly
Not heard of the rules, they do sound interesting though.
ReplyDeleteI will do a post when I have had a good look and possibly a little game…
DeleteAll the best. Aly
I'm intrigued, I must find out more - I have a Napoleon themed pack of cards that have been awaiting a purpose for ages.
ReplyDeleteThey have intrigued me Rob…
DeleteI too have set of Napoleonic themed playing cards 😁
All the best. Aly
Aly, I await your thorough review and analysis!
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to giving them a go Jonathan…
DeleteAll the best. Aly
Not a set I have come across, look forward to seeing how they play out sometime.
ReplyDeleteAs am I Phil…
DeleteEven if they aren’t what I am looking for…I may be able to take something away from the exercise.
All the best. Aly
Interesting not one I have experienced 👍
ReplyDeleteI will let you know how it goes…
DeleteAll the best. Aly
Haven't heard of them, but as I'm painting Napoleonics I am interested in how they work!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
I will let you know how they play…
DeleteAll the the best. Aly
Happy New Year ( I won't elaborate on the themes of my playing cards!)
ReplyDeleteLook forward to your thoughts on the rules.
Thank you Matt..
DeleteI also have some entertaining playing cards… 😁
All the best. Aly
Hadn't heard of these: a new set of rules (with what sounds like a new approach) for the new year...Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteThey are new to me as well Ed…
DeleteBut I like to try something new…
Have a happy and prosperous new year…
All the best. Aly
Happy New Year Aly - standard playing cards, as you probably know, are the mechanism used in To the Strongest and its sub variants such as For King and Parliament - they work quite well for a simple, fun game - but they do also use grids for movement and firing ranges - do your new Napoleonic rules also use a gridded playing area?
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Keith…
DeleteYes I am aware of To the Strongest… which sound very good
There are no grids in these rules… so it will be interesting to see how it goes.
All the best. Aly
So, no pressure then? Seems like the World and his dog are awaiting your detailed AAR and post-mortem on these rules.
ReplyDeleteHere’s hoping that the rules and I are up to the challenge 😬😁
DeleteAll the best. Aly
Interesting Aly. The one set of reviews (c/-Amazon) suggests simplified, perhaps not particularly Napoleonic and more about the game than the period? Of course, that's what a lot of people seem to be after.
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting to see what you make of them.
Regards, James
I have yet to have a run through of the rules with some toys on the table but it is certainly a two player game and as the review indicates… more Horse and Musket rather than purely Napoleonic.
