Another New Old Book…

Greetings…

I picked this splendid book up this week…

I have owned it before…. But it has disappeared somewhere over the years…
I was inspired to re buy it after I saw some lovely vignettes that David Bickley had posted on his blog…

I remember the book having some lovely drawings of various bits of camp and campaign life that could really fit into any period… not just the 30 Years War…

Here are a few images to wet the appetite…

I must say that it is as good as I remember it…
I don’t know quite when any of these may appear in my collections but I am sure they will…

All the best.  Aly

An edit for Rodor…

  4. A wonderful book, which we did not know. From the simple title and the cover, we certainly did not imagine that there were so many illustrations and above all that they dealt with the most varied aspects of war and the daily life of armies.
We are very curious about the wood shielding illustration, and in particular the images g and h. What do they represent according to the legend?

    2. Thanks so much for the edit! A great source of inspiration for unconventional shieldings when we decide to make our arquebusiers unit for Warhammer

Minifigs make some camp followers and medics… so that would be quite fun.

  7. It is such an inspiring book. I somehow managed to hold onto mine through various moves etc. I am glad I did. One to lose oneself in …

    1. Indeed a book to lose oneself in… rather than simply lose.

  8. I am clearly more careful with my books, some might say obsessive, as I still have my trusty copy I acquired back in the 80s?

  9. Lovely book,I used to sit in the local library reading it(as it was in the reference section, so you couldn't take it out) warlord has released a reprint but I don't think it's all the content and the printing seemed a bit poor when I looked at one, I was delighted when I found one in a second hand shop last year, there's lots to lose yourself in, enjoy!

  10. A splendid pickup (or re-acquisition?). This is one of the select treasures that I retained from my great library clear out. The single best reference on the era, in my opinion. The big, hardbound version is always worth a thumb through for inspiration.

    1. I am not really a Pike and Shot fan…😱
But when I look at this book… I do find myself looking at 30 Years War figures…
      Maybe one day….

  11. Blimey! That brings back memories. My Dad used to have this book. I remember trawling through it and drawing pictures from it. I even did a school project on Weapons & Warfare using this book in the early 80's.
Wonder if my Dad's still got it?
    Cheers Aly

  12. It is a DANGEROUS book!

Only bought because it was on sale, and full of pretty pictures, and I was young and a fan of the 17thC since I first read 'With Fire & Sword" when I was even younger, and had a few 15mm 30 Yrs war figures... .

Ever since, it has haunted my shelves, periodically emerging to haunt me with visions of things long gone or never done, or to tempt me!
