Greetings…
I picked this splendid book up this week…
I have owned it before…. But it has disappeared somewhere over the years…
I was inspired to re buy it after I saw some lovely vignettes that David Bickley had posted on his blog…
I remember the book having some lovely drawings of various bits of camp and campaign life that could really fit into any period… not just the 30 Years War…
Here are a few images to wet the appetite…
I don’t know quite when any of these may appear in my collections but I am sure they will…
All the best. Aly
An edit for Rodor…
Some fine inspiration in there.
ReplyDeleteThere certainly is Phil…

That looks to be a fantastic resource for sure. Thanks for sharing:).
ReplyDeleteIt is a lovely book Steve…
DeleteAnd it was a pleasure to share …
All the best. Aly
Pleased to have been of use! There are some lovely ideas there, for those with more skill than me!
ReplyDeleteDavid… You will always be of some use old chap…
DeleteAnd I reckon that you are more than capable of creating many lovely Ideas…
All the best. Aly
A wonderful book, which we did not know. From the simple title and the cover, we certainly did not imagine that there were so many illustrations and above all that they dealt with the most varied aspects of war and the daily life of armies.
ReplyDeleteWe are very curious about the wood shielding illustration, and in particular the images g and h. What do they represent according to the legend?
It is a lovely book indeed…
DeleteI have added a picture of the whole page so you can see the full description.
All the best. Aly
Thanks so much for the edit! A great source of inspiration for unconventional shieldings when we decide to make our arquebusiers unit for Warhammer
DeleteNo problem… it was my pleasure.
DeleteAll the best. Aly
Looks like a great find Aly and should inspire a man of your talents to some extraordinary model making - cant wait to see it!
ReplyDeleteIt is indeed a great book…
DeleteI like the idea of making some sutlers tents and shacks…
All the best. Aly
Nice looking book, not one I have …..I think but sometimes hard to remember. Looking forward to the shiny vignettes ?
ReplyDeleteI have now had it twice… I shall try and hang on to this one…
DeleteMinifigs make some camp followers and medics… so that would be quite fun.
All the best. Aly
It is such an inspiring book. I somehow managed to hold onto mine through various moves etc. I am glad I did. One to lose oneself in …
ReplyDeleteIndeed a book to lose oneself in… rather than simply lose.
DeleteAll the best. Aly
I am clearly more careful with my books, some might say obsessive, as I still have my trusty copy I acquired back in the 80s?
ReplyDeleteI bet you never lent it to anyone…
DeleteMy classic schoolboy error 😁
All the best. Aly
You are too right there, over my dead body...
DeleteLovely book,I used to sit in the local library reading it(as it was in the reference section, so you couldn't take it out) warlord has released a reprint but I don't think it's all the content and the printing seemed a bit poor when I looked at one, I was delighted when I found one in a second hand shop last year, there's lots to lose yourself in, enjoy!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
I had heard that the reprints weren’t as good… so I am glad I managed to get an original…

A splendid pickup (or re-acquisition?). This is one of the select treasures that I retained from my great library clear out. The single best reference on the era, in my opinion. The big, hardbound version is always worth a thumb through for inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI am not really a Pike and Shot fan…😱
DeleteBut when I look at this book… I do find myself looking at 30 Years War figures…
Maybe one day….
All the best. Aly
Blimey! That brings back memories. My Dad used to have this book. I remember trawling through it and drawing pictures from it. I even did a school project on Weapons & Warfare using this book in the early 80's.
ReplyDeleteWonder if my Dad's still got it?
Cheers Aly
It is a cracking book…
DeleteThere is indeed everything you need if your were doing a school project on the 30 Years War os weapons of war in the 17th century….
All the best. Aly
It is a DANGEROUS book!
ReplyDeleteOnly bought because it was on sale, and full of pretty pictures, and I was young and a fan of the 17thC since I first read 'With Fire & Sword" when I was even younger, and had a few 15mm 30 Yrs war figures... .
Ever since, it has haunted my shelves, periodically emerging to haunt me with visions of things long gone or never done, or to tempt me!
Dangerous indeed Ross…
DeleteI await to see what you will do when you eventually give in to temptation…
All the best. Aly
Strangely, cover looks vaguely familiar but don't think it's one I've really noticed - looks like an excellent reference!
ReplyDeleteIt is indeed an excellent reference Rob…
DeleteI highly recommend it.
All the best. Aly
