Greetings…
On Friday I went over to Alan Perry’s to play a Spanish Civil War game using very tweaked Blackpowder rules…
Rick , Michael and David were the Nationalists…. Boooo!
Nick , Alan and I were the Republicans…. Hurrah!
There were five objectives on the table…The Monastery , The Trenches, The Ford in the River, The House on the Hill and The Convoy.
Looking from just above the Trenches towards the Monastery. The Ford can be seen just behind the church on the right… The church was not an objective.
Looking up the table over two non objective Hamlets towards the No Mans Land between the Monastery and the Trenches
We diced for which side of the table we started on… The Republic got the trench side.
Nicks force…
Mostly International Brigade but with some help from an Anarchist truck driver to tow the artillery.
We had a collective command meeting and Nick decided to move his men out of the Trenches and towards the Ford and the church which would leave the Trenches free for me to use.
Some of Nick’s brave volunteers were already in position to move to their objective.
Nationalists occupy the Monastery… You can see that it had previously been occupied by some of our brave comrades… I think they left it quite clean and tidy.
Nationalist militia run around waving a flag…
The Convoy…
If it got to the Monastery then it would be a victory point to the Nationalists if it was destroyed or captured by the Republic the point would go to them.
David’s Spanish Foreign Legionaries occupy a defensive position which overlooks the Ford… This would become known as the tortilla position.
Republican artillery and a heavy machine gun lay down support to the International Brigade as they move towards the Ford.
After some debate my Anarchic Militia rush through the woods…with cries of land and freedom…hoping to attack the flank of the Monastery…
Suitably encouraged by a Republican Politico ( also suitably ignored).
By collective agreement we brought on our Artillery and Armoured Car…
Alan’s Marxist Militia move down to the river while unseen ( The official Photo Journalist forgot to take a picture… this happened a lot ) the rest of his men supported by Assaulto’s capture the House on the Hill.
David’s Moroccans also move forward to support their Legionary comrades.
Republican forces push more men into the area around the church and tortilla position.
My brave comrades make a glorious (Some may say futile) assault on the farmhouse that flanks and covers the no man’s land between the Trench and the Monastery… This first attempt failed.
While the fighting continues at the farmhouse, comrades make their way towards the Monastery.
After a vigorous debate and a vote a decision was made to wait for our armoured car to move up and together with the machine gun we filled the farmhouse with bullets… which worked a treat.
At the Monastery people started pointing and an armed priest took aim nervously hoping for three six’s during the firing phase…
The Committee for Command and Tactical Decisions debates the pros and cons of occupying the Trenches.
With heavy fighting going on around the tortilla position David’s Moroccans move forwards to try and capture the church.
Ricks Moroccans ready themselves to attack the House on the Hill objective… This apparently got quite bloody and ended with Alan’s forces holding their positions…. I can see a position of Official Photo Journalist becoming available soon.
The Convoy… Doing whatever convoys do…
After considerable debate some of the comrades made a reckless decision to occupy a building in the no man’s land opposed the Monastery… Much to their consternation all of Michaels men starting shooting at them.
Fortunately the armoured car, artillery piece and those comrades with more sense started pouring fire in the enemies direction.
The Trenches were occupied… But turned out to be too far away from the enemy to do any good… A fresh debate started…..
Savage fighting continued around the church… Which was eventually taken by the Moroccans and Legionnaires… Although the bells tolled in victory their celebrations were somewhat dulled when they realised/remembered that this had not been an objective.
At some point our lovely locality built armoured car was knocked out on its way towards the Convoy…
Now if only we had a decent Official Photo Journalist.
This was a great game with a lot going on all over the table… In the end the Republicans held on to the House on The Hill and the Trenches… The Nationalists kept the Monastery and the Ford… the Convoy didn’t get to its destination but it also didn’t get captured buy the Republic… Everybody’s brigades were broken so they couldn’t really do anything constructive.
A draw was declared/debated/decided.
The terrain was by Alan and the figures were from Nicks collection…
All of my comrades meetings votes and debates actually reflect how bad my dice were…so nothing new then.
After one final committee meeting a possible solution was found…
And yes… Only one of them hit the target… sigh!
All the best. Aly
Aly, a fantastic battle told in great fun! Wonderful terrain and figures. I am still laughing at your firing squad photo. Classic Aly! I may borrow me that idea sometime.
ReplyDeleteThank you Jonathan…
DeleteThey were clearly Fifth Column dice… 😁
Borrow away old chap.
All the best. Aly
Outstanding report and it sounds like a great game. Love the picture of the dice and firing squad!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Mark…
DeleteIt was indeed good fun.
If only the firing squad was on target 🤣
All the best. Aly
Great stuff Aly...SCW may be my next solo game, based on this report alone! Figures and terrain are all fantastic!
ReplyDeleteThank you Keith…
DeleteOf course my butterfly is all fluttery now…🤣🦋🤣
I look forward to seeing your game.
All the best. Aly
As it turned out, my own butterfly fluttered in a different direction .... !
DeleteFantastic looking game....and at least the Republican's didn't start shooting at each other!
ReplyDeleteIt was a terrific cracking game Matt…
DeleteShooting at each other would have involved setting up a committee first… then taking a vote 😁
All the best. Aly
Brilliant game, terrain and figures! The firing squad is inspired, even if they barely hit the dice:).
ReplyDeleteIt was indeed…
DeleteI think the dice found it amusing as well 😁
All the best. Aly
An entertaining game report with lots of wonderful pictures. I did laugh at the last picture.
ReplyDeleteThank you Peter…
DeleteAlways glad to put a smile on your face.
All the best. Aly
A wonderfully chaotic sounding game......which is perfectly in tune with the period !
ReplyDeleteIndeed Stuart…
DeleteThe left hand didn’t know what the left of centre hand was doing.
All the best. Aly
Aly always a great multi player period full of chaotic fun. Glad to see your usual standard of dice rolling continues, Napoleon would never have had you on his side. The photos of the set up look great
ReplyDeleteThank you Graham…
DeleteAlan did a splendid job with the terrain…
Oh! To be a lucky General 🤣
All the best. Aly
What a wonderfully entertaining AAR and super photos. At last your dice (almost) meet a deserved fate...
ReplyDeleteThank you David…
DeleteI am hoping that this will be a warning to the others…🤔
All the best. Aly
What a beautiful (and fun) looking game!
ReplyDeleteIt really is time you put up (and bought some new dice) or...
...are your dice really that bad? Do you keep a journal of every die thrown or do you just remember the bad throws? I find I only remember bad dice as when they're good it' just as it should be and simply adding the cherry on top of my superior generalship.
It was indeed Rob…
DeleteI was using Alan’s dice…
When he rolled them… 4’s,5’s and 6’s
When I used them… 1’s,2’s and 3’s
So it’s not really the dice… It’s me 😱
All the best. Aly
A fun and action packed game there wonderfully narrated. I take it you threw quite a few Juan's too.
ReplyDeleteThank you Phil…
DeleteIt was indeed Juan to remember 😬
All the best. Aly
What lovely chaos! I'm guessing that in the traditional tiebreaking debate after a drawn the game that the well practiced Republicans held the edge!
ReplyDeleteChaos indeed and a touch of Anarchy.
DeleteWe deployed our crack elite negotiators/politicos… Rhetoric delivered with a monotone soporific voice… They either agree or fall asleep 😁
All the best. Aly
It was a great game - although the official history more accurately reflects upon a celebrated Nationalist victory, with the convoy rolling across the ford and into the monastery courtyard. By this time, I suspect the Republicans had all fled the field in disarray, and so failed to take full account of their utter defeat.
ReplyDeleteAh!…You would say that wouldn’t you…
DeleteBut as we all know… It didn’t happen… Unless you have a well posed propaganda photo to prove it 😂🤣😂
All the best. Aly
A lovely looking table and game as to be expected when the Perrys host. Very fun read-through as well - thanks for sharing Aly.
ReplyDeleteIt was indeed a cracking looking game Dai…
DeleteI’m glad you enjoyed the AAR.
All the best. Aly
Splendid
ReplyDeleteThank you Nick…
DeleteWe definitely had the edge in the end…maybe 😂
All the best. Aly
Splendid looking game, lovely terrain and figures, always tempted by the Spanish civil war but must resist!

ReplyDeleteIt was indeed Warburton…

All the best. Aly
Nice looking game and great report Aly! Now I can clearly see which Spanish Civil war you played :-D
ReplyDeleteBest wishes,

Some of the uniforms are indeed reminiscent of the Carlist Wars.
