ALY MORRISON'S "BUTTERFLY" ADVENTURES IN THE WORLD OF WARGAMES AND TOY SOLDIERS

2023… Another Year.

Greetings…

Well another year has come and gone…

Looking back it’s been quite a busy one… Maybe not as much with my hobby as I would have liked but time has certainly flown past…

Once again our so called leaders have shown us how to behave like total ‘Richard’ Heads… I am beginning to think that it’s well past the time we should have got the pitchforks and flaming brands out…🙄

And once again it’s family , friends and hobbies that keep me sane.

Due to Work, Building Work and Life/Health I haven’t been as busy as I would have liked… But looking at things I have done a lot more than I thought…

I have really butterflied around with my figure painting throughout the year… Only really coming into sharper focus in December…

A shiny start…

A jump up in size to 40mm..

15mm Dacians for DBA…

15mm Carolingians

Back up to 28mm…

Dads Army…

Oh Yes!… Flutter Flutter Flutter…

Dads Army needs some Villains…

And of course the Normans need some Byzantines…

And Flutter Flutter…

Camels!… Not even I saw that coming 🤣.

Last but by no means least…The Wars of the Roses…

Which I surprised myself by finishing everything I needed in about four weeks… Then had a game.

Oh! And I also built and painted some Snowmen.

But wait… There’s more…

The Great Rebasing Project…

The Purchase from Mr Bickley…

Some of the 24 Rebased, Re-Flagged,Re-Speared and Re-Shielded units…Hurrah!

Of course once I got the rebasing bug…

The start of the Crimean War Rebasing…

Games…

Ive actually played more games than I have taken pictures of…

Alan Perry’s Peninsular War Campaign and I am also involved in David from Miniature Minions Vimeiro Game to name a couple…

Here are a few other pictures…

So why haven’t I had more of my toys out on the table…

Building Works…😱

Most of my toys and a lot of other things have been consigned to boxes while the drains were getting dug up… Concrete getting poured and the Cellar getting ‘Tanked Out’ and plastered.

I had a Bobcat living on the drive… They wouldn’t let me play with it ☹️.

Outside…

Inside…

Tanking material on top of a new concrete floor… It looks a bit like mega bubble wrap.

Good plastering always impresses me… My chap got a glass like finish on all the surfaces.

The electrics are actually started beneath the surface and the lights and electrical points should go in very soon.
It’s going to be a workshop and storage area.
The next place to see some attention will be the wargames room…New lighting, re plastering and painting.

I still haven’t fully shaken off the virus I caught at the beginning of November… Some of my younger friends took five weeks to get rid of it.. So I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised that knackered old me with Sarcoidosis will take a bit longer…
I am feeling a heck of a lot better though…

Next year…

I’ve no real plans… so I am going to butterfly along until the wargames room is all finished and see where things take me…
Some new wargames terrain might be fun…

A Happy and Prosperous New Year to you all… And thank you for following my butterfly adventures.

All the best.  Aly

  1. A happy New Year to you Aly, considering the initial statement of not getting as much done due to interruptions that report is pretty prolific. I blame the butterflies we get lots of little bits completed which tends to make us think we haven’t done much,
It looks like an exciting year with cellar, gaming room being developed - exciting times.
I like the no real plans approach for next year 😄 I’ve had so many targets and constraints over the years to have time to drift is a luxury, my main aim for next year is just to play more.

Butterflying can also give you nice surprises…Like when you realise that you have actually finished something 😁.
I think that aiming to play lots of games is an excellent plan.

The cellar has been a pretty useless space for years so I am rather pleased with the way it is going 😁

Despite fluttering from one thing to another, I think you actually achieved more than I did with relentless focus.....😞

I was quite surprised when I actually looked at what I had done over the year… I wonder what things would have looked like without all the distractions.

  7. Share your sentiments on good friends, family, and hobby being central to our well being (the older one gets, the more true this becomes). And I thought I was dealing with alot of renovation/repair!

For a while it felt like every time someone stuck a shovel in the ground something weird or worrying turned up… but it is starting to look closer to finishing every day.

  15. The premise is that we always wanted to do more than we did, but looking at the series of images it seems like it was a great year. Beautiful miniatures, some that we knew, others that we were able to recover through your post.
We hope that in this year that has just begun, your butterfly can roam free and happy in all the fields you want, also thanks to the new 'hobby den' that you are about to build for it...
    All the best for 2024!

To be honest I am prepping for retirement… The only thing I want to worry about is how I fill my time in my shiny new playhouse 😁
I actually have a unit of Sassanid Camel Cataphracts in the painting Alp… So hopefully they will collect some paint this year.

  24. A very productive, and of course varied year I'd say! We had to get the drains done and the cellar tanked, someone thought smashing up the pipes at some point inthe past was a good thing which lead to flooding, nice finish, used to be a spread but now I try to just supervise!

Did the same people that owned your house owned mine…
The same problem/cause…. A broken drain… Every time I had a shower or a bath the water emptied onto the outside of the cellar instead of going into the drain due to a cracked pipe…
The builder reckoned it could have been cracked when they converted the building into flats … A mere thirty years ago 😳.
      All fixed now…
I would strongly advise against you using Butch Cassiday and the Sundance Kid builders…🤣
      All the best. Aly
