ALY MORRISON'S "BUTTERFLY" ADVENTURES IN THE WORLD OF WARGAMES AND TOY SOLDIERS

From my side of the table… The Battle of Palencia.

Greetings…

Alan Perry has now posted his account of the final action in his Peninsular War Campaign…

The  Battle of Palencia…

This was only my second action in the campaign… I spent most of the game retreating, recovering and marching…I believe at one time I marched to the top of the hill and I marched back down again.

This was the last action in the campaign…And we came second…We would have come first if it hadn’t been for those pesky dice.

There is a relatively accurate account of things here…

Here are some pictures I took of the game…

Hot cavalry action…

My light troops being sneaky…

These were so pretty I really had to give them a close up.

Win or lose it was a splendid game.
Alan puts a lot of effort and energy into these campaigns which really helps you get involved in the narrative…I may have done a lot of marching around but I still felt I was mere moments away from trouble.

The figures and terrain were all from Alan’s collection .

All the best.  Aly

  3. A stunning looking game, as we would expect from the Perrys. Hopefully the enjoyment of the aesthetics compensated for the dodgy dice...

    2. It's not the winning that matters, it's taking part... ;-) Just repeat that mantra a few million times and you'll believe it, so they tell me.

  4. What a splendid spectacle, I am quite green with envy. I would even take marching up hills and down again to see a game of that beauty! As to coming second, well, it's just one place off first...

It was also a close second 😁.

  5. That looks like like every wargamer's lottery pipe-dream, endless beautifully painted troops fighting across some stunning terrain.
Was it a Valour & Fortitude game?
Also fascinated by the 'pretty unit' with their horizontal tricolour and everyone in colpacks - do you know who they are and the source for this?

    1. Yes the wonderful Alan Perry collection…What’s not to like.
We were using Black Powder for this game.
The Pretty unit are Voltigeurs from Oudinot’s Grenadier division…

  6. Great game and good company as always - fantastic tabletop and a great job by Alan running the whole caboodle. As for winners and losers... my memory is a little hazy on such things ;)

  7. Well, if it's good enough for the Grand Old Duke of York, I wouldn't disparage marching up and down a hill. If the game was half as splendid as the images, then no doubt it was a memorable one (particularly as part of a campaign as opposed to a one off).

  11. It certainly is a lovely looking piece of countryside … probably not improved by the debris of battle…
It was however a lot of fun.

  13. What a fantastic looking culmination to the campaign. Love all of those combined grenadiers with the tricolor. Makes me regret leaving mine unflagged, though Junot's Grenadier reserve was more of a temporary arrangement. Who were you sneaky lights? That's a great looking uniform, but I must admit my ignorance.

I have to admit using Alan’s Confederation of the Rhine troops really got my butterfly fluttering… I wish he would make some for the 40mm range…
