Shiny Napoleonics… The 3rd Regiment Etranger 1811-1814 (The Irish Regiment)

Greetings…
Here we have my version of the French Napoleonic ‘Irish Regiment’…

The 3rd Regiment Etranger 1811-1814.

My inspiration for this unit was the work of my good blogging comrades…
Matthew from Hinton Spieler.

And David from Miniature Minions…

Of course for inspiration read ‘shameless copying’ 😁

So… Here we go.

The figures are Ros 25mm Figures…
For more information on this company may I suggest Bobs excellent blog…

I did have to do some work on them… Shortening the coat tails and gaiters then adding short swords to the Chasseurs.
The command are Minifigs…
When I bought these figures I originally thought they were Minifigs… And they do fit rather well with both ‘S’ and ‘Intermediate’ ranges.

For the standard I used a GMB Designs French light Infantry flag which I altered to say 3rd Regiment Etranger … This does not survive close examination but works okay for me…

The Uniforms are… Foundry… Forest Green Shade 26B.
The Yellow bits are… AK Interactive… Volcanic Yellow AK11042.
The Red bits are… Citadel… Evil Sunz Scarlet.
The Green bits are… Citadel… Warboss Green.
The White bits are… Citadel… Pallid Wych Flesh.
The Gaiters are… Citadel… Corvus Black.

Everything was given a wash of Aly’s Brown Liquid then highlighted with the original colours… The lighter colours were then given an extra highlight to pick them out a bit more.

The paints were Citadel, Wargames Foundry and AK Interactive.

The bases are as always…

The Flag is GMB Designs…

I have read that the Ros French Infantryman is one of the ugliest figures ever made…I am sure I have seen worse.

They take a bit more work than Minifigs or Lammings but I am very pleased with the results.

The Butterfly has managed to land on something new and interesting…I will reveal more when I have painted something…. There is also some more shininess on the go.

All the best   Aly

  1. Magnifique mais ce n’est pas un wargame.
Nous attendons de les voir en action dans un jeu.

Le catha clúdaithe i mboscaí agus gan aon tír-raon tógtha... beidh an tsíocháin i réim go ceann tamaill eile.

Got to love Google Translate 😁

  2. A regiment that is not only very shiny, but also very colourful! It is probably the green that gives greater prominence to the other colours, in particular the badges and the colored feathers.
We've never seen these miniatures unpainted before, but in our opinion to say they're ugly is unfair to a lot of the other, more hideous miniatures vying for the podium :D... unless you've done miracles with your paintjob!

If only I could perform miracles…😁
They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder and although they may not be the most beautiful… They are certainly not monsters.

  3. A very fine addition to the growing shinyness. Look forward to seeing where the butterfly landed in due course.

  4. You have certainly done a good job with these Aly. I do remember having a few Ros 25mm cavalry back in the day...10 figures including horses for 50p IIRC....and that's at a time when even Minifigs were 15 or 20p each for a cavalry figure! Ugliest ever...perhaps not...I had some Warrior figures out of Glasgow that might have taken that title....but Ros figures were definitely very basic!

I think that the cost was one of the biggest attractions… But they are not hideous figures… I would happily have more of them.

  8. The Irish Legion is one of those units with nice colour combinations that mean wargamers must have them! Like the Neuchatel regiment....☺
The closest I've got to Ros figures are the Ros plastic ancients....

  15. These certainly have caused a stir in the comments section. I found comparing the three versions fascinating. The uniforms certainly make an impact -very nice.
Was it a deliberate choice not to add a drummer or did you lack a figure?
I do like the addition of the sapper - these gentlemen always look grand and somehow powerful individuals. [The Royal Artillery's Battleaxe Battery have a bearded gunner carrying a Napoleonic French Sapper's Axe - a battle honour which the Battery Commander of the day saw as more practical than the French gun he was offered as a trophy].

Like others I eagerly anticipate the new butterfly but hope this is not the last of your Napoleonics.

I hope too to put some shiny vanish on some of my own figures today - then there's just the bases to paint.

There is a drummer but he is tucked away behind the standard bearer… 😁
I do like the sappers… They are also enjoyable to paint..
Fear not I have many more Napoleonics in the lead Alp.
Putting the shine on is one of my favourite parts.

  16. Wonderful work on the figures and it makes the Irish look great. The unit always has been fun to see table top and your own is a great example. Thanks for the paint list and other tips.

  17. If one of these pics had appeared in the glossy colour photo centrefold in a hardcover wargame book in the '70's, I'd have spent way too much time admiring these lads and day dreaming.

They had a little bit of tweaking but they are basically sound models to work from…
I have some Prussians and Austrians in the lead Alp… the only thing missing is some command…
      I’m keeping my eyes open…😁

  21. I don't think there were any Austrian command figures produced before the range was abandoned. Just wondering what Austrians you have. There was a line infantry figure in shako, a grenadier in bearskin and a Tyrolean Jaeger was listed, but I have never seen an example.

For the Prussians they had quite a good range. I have some spare Prussian command and artillery figures if you would like them. Just give me an email address and we can discuss. Bob

    1. Hi Bob…
The Austrians I have are the infantry in shako…
Thank you for your offer but I shall hold off on getting more Prussians for the moment… my digging around in various boxes has discovered and embarrassment of unpainted vintage Napoleonics….🤣
I am going make an effort to get some organising and painting done.
