Shiny Napoleonics... 42nd French Line Infantry

Greetings...
I hope you are all safe and well...

So... here is another addition to the Shiny Napoleonics collection...

The 42nd French Line Infantry... Why the 42nd?
I had a standard that was suitable for the 42nd (among others) and when I looked the uniform up in my Osprey Napoleons Line Infantry they sounded like they would be rather pretty.

I am fairly pleased with these... but I do have a couple of niggles...

The miniatures are a mix of Minifigs S/Intermediate Range(I think) and the current Minifigs... The older figures had some rather bent and battered bases so I flattened the bases out and also decided to beef them up a bit... looking at them now I don't think that they needed thickening...

I only used a single rank of Flank Companies...because I didn't think I had enough... (Guess who just found a big bag of suitable toys) which means that my Elites look out of place when in column...

I may be over thinking this... I shall leave them as they are and if I am still niggled in a couple of months I shall do something about it...

Of course this would be an alternative way of forming a column...

When I started this project I decided to place it around 1812-1813 as this would let me use an interesting mix of transitional uniforms and standards (get away with taking liberties)...
So this regiment has been lucky enough to receive a nice new 1812 model standard but alas like many others continues to wear its older uniforms... That's my story and I am sticking to it.

I had another go at using Citadel Contrast Colours on these...

The White bits are...  Citadel... Corax White with a wash of Contrast Apothecary White.
This was then highlighted back up to an off white.
The Coats are... Citadel... Kantor Blue with a wash of Contrast Leviadon Blue. This gives quite a dark blue... next time I may dilute the wash a bit.
The Drummer has a... Citadel... Lothern Blue coat with... Foundry Ochre 4B facings.

The paints are Wargames Foundry and Citadel...

The Flag is GMB Designs...

    1. Thank you Jonathan...
It’s worked well over the years... given that it’s just an A3 print out...

    2. That's a relief - I'd wondered if the place was on fire, but you hadn't noticed. Looks good, anyway.

    1. That’s certainly one of the things you can say about Minifigs... you new what you were getting... left leg forward for pretty much everything...:-)

    3. I forgot about the sink holes... 😂
Mostly on horses as I recall... and the occasional greatcoat...

  4. Another gorgeous regiment, Aly!
May I enquire abut the dimensions of your element stands? They have a lovely chunky look to them.
    Best regards

My bases are 3mm MDF and are 45mm wide and 50mm deep...
      For cavalry is use 50mm x 50mm...
I have always liked chunky bases so I planed to do this from the beginning...
I would prefer it if people handled the bases rather than the toys...😱

  5. More lovely nostalgia - its like doing the time warp but in full colour rather than those suspicious black and white photos we used to see in the mags, and yes Aly I think you're over thinking!

  6. I think you ARE over thinking Aly...blame the lock down at too much time for introspection! The unit looks fine, from my memory if French Napoleonic organisation, they had two flank companies and four centre companies, so the proportion of elite to standard troops is probably right anyway!

You are of course correct... in a couple of weeks I won’t give a damn.... 😁
I will be fretting about Bronze Age Europeans or Palestinian Club Men...

  11. Extremely handsome figures! I've always had a soft spot in my heart for Minifigs, either 15mm or 25mm. You do them justice and then some.

  15. Aly, I Simply love your work. The painterly soft quality you are able to achieve is lovely. I especially like the white with subtle grey shading. Very effective. May I ask how you gloss coat? There is something about your technique that just makes them look different than most gloss coverings I have seen (certainly from my own!).

    1. Thank you David...

The varnish I use is an own brand gloss yacht varnish from a British/Midlands hardware and household store... called Wilco’s.
I am sure it’s the same as a lot of other own brand products... I started buying it because it was easily available and relatively cheap... and as it turns out rather good...

I always apply a good thick coat...
I am sure that one day it may start to yellow a bit... but you know I think that may actually enhance the effect I am going for...

      All the best. Aly

  16. A beautiful unit Aly. I know that most people like the uniform look, but I think that slightly different heights of figures is more realistic, when one looks at photos of troops in more modern eras (and even closely at paintings)

    1. Thank you James…
My apologies for missing your comment for so long…
To be honest the height difference isn’t really that noticeable…
Although there is a good deal of height variation across the older Minifigs ranges anyway.
